Chapter 14 — Our Father Couldn’t Be Here

“Our father couldn’t be here today,” Tess said into the microphone.

And the auditorium went quiet — that specific, total quiet of a large room where hundreds of people have all, at the same instant, understood that something real is happening.

And I felt the floor tilt under me, because I did not yet understand, because for one terrible plunging second I thought she meant my brother, thought this was going to be about the man who left, and I did not know if I could stand to hear it.

Rosie reached inside the neck of her graduation gown and drew out a folded piece of paper, old and soft with age, and even from row twelve, even through the tears already blurring everything, I knew what it was.

I would have known it anywhere.
