But one thing mattered more than anything else. I had not asked Whitfield to involve soldiers in this. I did not want military influence brought into a civilian investigation.

I made several calls, but none were to people who could deploy troops. One went to an old friend from officer training who now worked with the Army’s Criminal Investigation Division — not because my mother’s case fell under military jurisdiction.
It did not. I called because she knew investigators, and investigators often knew other investigators. That is sometimes how a truth trapped for years finally begins to move.
She connected me with an FBI field office two counties away. Special Agent Renata Cole listened for forty uninterrupted minutes. When I finished, she gave me six words I would never forget.
