Twelve Seconds
“This is all because of one slap,” he said. His voice broke on the last word, disbelief and confusion twisting across his face. “You did all of this because I hit an old woman.”
I watched him silently. I thought about my mother’s hands shaking around a coffee pot. About more than thirty families losing property while officials called every incident a coincidence.
About my father driving a familiar road on a clear night, three weeks after someone marked him uncooperative.
“No,” I said. “This is not because of one slap.”
He waited. For the first time since I’d met him, I saw genuine fear in his eyes.
“This happened because, for years, people like you and your father decided you were above the law. You believed rules were things other people had to follow.”
