Chapter 6 — I Didn’t Scream

I ended the call.

I did not call him back.

I did not confront him.

I did not scream, and I did not cry — not then, not yet.

There would be a time for crying, and it came, later, in private, once it could no longer cost me anything.

But in that first moment I did something that surprised me, something I did not know I had in me: I got very, very quiet.

I sat down on the edge of my bed and I stared at the floor, and I let the storm move through me without letting a single piece of it out where it could be seen.
