Now I understand them as the bravest thing anyone has ever done for me.

My child was not rejecting me.

He was buying us time, and buying it with the most valuable currency he had, which was my belief in his love — spending it, temporarily, gambling that I would understand in the end.

I did understand.

And the understanding is the foundation the rest of our life is built on now: not the silence I mistook for peace all those years, but the hard, clean, load-bearing truth that we finally, both of us, tell each other.

I share this not for sympathy but to say one thing to any mother reading it who feels she has lost everything — her home, her money, her voice, even her child.
