The clinic administrator had been thorough, in the way of a man who has been getting away with it long enough to grow careless.
He had sold patient data to whoever would buy it.
He had falsified diagnoses — not randomly, but on request, for money.
And here was the part that made the whole room go cold when I finally understood it: he had taken payments from spouses.
From husbands and wives who wanted leverage in a divorce, who wanted a paper reason to blame the other, who wanted a body declared broken so a settlement would tilt their way.
