A line of black SUVs and military vehicles rolled into the crowded lot. A man in full dress uniform, his chest covered in medals, stepped out of the lead vehicle.
He crossed the room without so much as a glance at Tristan or his family, stopped in front of my father, came to attention, and gave him a formal salute.
“Mr. James Evans,” he said, his strong voice catching. “I finally found you, after all these years.”
Nobody in that room could have guessed what was coming next.

The man shook his head, and a warm smile broke across his stern face. He introduced himself as Shawn Fitzgerald, a commander in the United States Army.
