At dawn on the tenth of February, Marlowe walked out into the freezing air carrying one old duffel bag, and left a sealed white envelope lying under the keyring.
“Just read what’s inside, Desmond.
Please,” she whispered as she went.
He would think about that whisper for the rest of his life — the fact that even then, even as she was being thrown out of her home into a winter dawn while carrying his child, she did not scream at him, did not curse him, did not tell the family what she must have already begun to suspect about the mother orchestrating all of it.
She simply asked him to read the envelope.
