The footage was clear, far clearer than anyone had expected, high-definition and steady, recorded from a small aftermarket surveillance camera that had been hidden inside the bookshelf of Marcus Vance’s office.

It was a camera the original police forensic team had never found, and there was a reason they had never found it.

The office, in the aftermath of the murder, had been thoroughly ransacked and then set on fire, a deliberate destruction that had been read by investigators as an attempt to obscure a struggle, and had done exactly that, so effectively that no one had thought to search an already burned and gutted bookshelf for a device no one knew existed.
