Chapter 5 — The Evidence

On the screen, Tara laughed while Della — ghost-pale and shaking — struggled under the weight of a heavy serving tray. Then my mother’s voice filled the room.

“If she collapses again, just leave her out in the yard,” she said on the recording. “She always makes a scene when people come over.”

The silence that fell afterward was louder than any shouting could have been.

Tara lunged for the phone, but an officer stepped between us and stopped her. My mother’s eyes darted from the lawyer to the notary, hunting for a technicality to save her.

“That video doesn’t prove the money was ever yours!” she snapped. “You sent it because you were a good son, and once it was deposited, it became mine!”

Without a word, I produced four full years of international transfer records, payroll statements, the texts where she’d promised to manage my money to build my house, the messages where she’d assured me Della was being cared for.
