There had been a terrible fight on Thursday night, she told Clara.

Screaming in the kitchen — her mother and Julian.

Her mother had said she knew what he’d done with the money, and that she was taking Maya and going, that night.

And Julian had gotten frightening in a way Maya had never seen, and there had been a crash, and her mother had told her to run, to hide, to go and not come out no matter what she heard.

So Maya had run.

She had hidden in the yard, in the dark space by the shed, the way her mother told her to, and she had stayed there, too scared to move, while her mother’s voice and then Julian’s moved through the house and then out to the garage and then went away.
