What They Left Behind
No cash.
No card.
No signature.
Just the printed bill I had left, and nothing beside it, and two people who were no longer anywhere in the restaurant.
They had walked out.
They had eaten four hundred dollars of food and wine, waited for the moment my back was turned, and gotten up and left, out through the front doors and gone, dumping the entire bill onto me.
I felt the floor drop out of my stomach.
