I stood there, stunned, waiting for him to check the cameras, to make a call, to do any of the things a person in his position could plainly do.

He did none of them.

He did not care who those people were or whether they could be found.

It was easier, cleaner, and cheaper for him to simply push the loss down onto the lowest person in the building, and that, I have come to believe, is the whole quiet machinery of how the powerful stay comfortable at the expense of the powerless.

It is rarely dramatic.
