Whether it was his fault.
That is what neglect does to a child that young: it does not register to them as the adult’s failure.
It registers as their own.
They have not yet learned that grown-ups can be the broken ones; they assume, always, that if something is wrong, it is wrong with them.
And so my boy had spent who knew how many cold nights on that floor concluding, quietly, in whatever way a child concludes things, that he was the kind of boy his father left downstairs.
I could not let that stand.
