I made myself read all of it.

And then, near the top, dated three weeks earlier, I found something that was not between Gideon and Yvette at all.

It was between Gideon and a name I didn’t recognize, with a law firm’s signature block.

And as I read it, the ground shifted under me a second time that morning, because I realized that the affair — the thing that had detonated my whole world at 6:14 that morning — was not even the real plot.

The affair was the sideshow.
