My work.

My shifts.

The long nights I spent at the hospital were going to be compiled into a record, printed out, and presented to a family-court judge as proof that I was never home, that I didn’t raise my own child, that I was too busy with my career to be a real mother to my son.

I read it twice, to be sure I understood it, and then a kind of cold came over me that I had never felt before, a cold that was very clear and very quiet.

Because look at the shape of it.
