“I can wrap her up for the car,” Ethan said, his voice trailing off into an uncertain offer.

I reached out and took the blanket from his fingers before he could lift it.

I wrapped June myself, carefully tucking the warm fleece around her chin while she slept deeply, worn out from hours of fever and crying.

Ethan stood near the open doorway, holding his leather messenger bag over his shoulder with both hands.

“Do you want me to carry the diaper bag?” Ethan asked, his eyes darting to the canvas bag sitting on the floor chair.

I picked up the diaper bag with my left hand, held June securely against my chest with my right arm, and walked out of the room without answering him.
