Footsteps sounded on the stairwell above.

“The buyer arrives at dawn,” Spencer’s voice carried. “Father wants him ready before Sabrina wakes up.”

A second voice, a hired doctor’s, answered flatly. “If she wakes up at all.”

Hayden photographed everything — the clinic, the surgical logs, forged birth records, ledgers, files on adoption networks running across state lines. This wasn’t one controlling old man.
