Sabrina opened her eyes two days later. It wasn’t the way it happens in films. She didn’t smile or speak. Her right index finger twitched against the sheet first, and then her lips moved as she worked to breathe.

Hayden had been in the chair beside her for forty-eight hours, unshaven, still in the same clothes.

“Sabrina,” he whispered, leaning close. “I’m right here.”

It took her a long moment to find his face. Her jaw was wired, her voice barely a rasp. “The… baby.”

He leaned in, tears on his face. “He’s alive, sweetheart. He’s safe.”
