I stood in the doorway and watched her go, this girl who had spent her whole childhood folding herself into corners, walk out into the open with her whole self showing, and I understood that I was witnessing something I had waited sixteen years to see: not the world finally accepting my daughter, which I had long ago stopped expecting, but my daughter finally accepting herself, which was infinitely better, because it was hers, and no one could take it from her.
