Without a Veil
A fire alarm blared through the halls.
Thick gray smoke began to slide under the office door. Someone had set the ground floor beneath the archive alight.
Manuel grabbed the blue folder, but Rosalie turned back for Lorelei’s coded notebook.
A burning beam crashed down between them, the ceiling groaned, and the windows blew outward from the heat.
“Rosalie, get out — now!” Manuel shouted through the flames.
Through the smoke, she caught a glimpse of a dark shape sliding the heavy iron bolt shut on the outside of the door, trapping them — just as a ceiling support snapped and fell straight onto Manuel.
