Whatever it had cost me to find out the truth about Corvin, at least the finding was over, and I could stand up straight, and breathe air that only smelled of a city rather than of a house where I was priced by the month.

I took the burner phone out of my bag — the little prepaid thing I had used for two years to text Corvin — pried out the SIM card, snapped it in half, and dropped it in a public trash can.

Then, from a zippered pocket sewn into the lining, I took out my real phone, and pressed a single key.
