years later would spend decades trying to understand what the burial assembly meant.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_3\"><\/div>\n<p>More than a hundred stone and bone tools surrounded the child.<\/p>\n<p>Many showed no signs of use.<\/p>\n<p>Several were finished to a standard of workmanship that archaeologists would later describe as among the finest examples of their kind ever found \u2014 large, thin, beautifully flaked stone points and blades, shaped with a skill that reflected not just functional mastery but something that looks, across twelve thousand years, like intentionality and pride of craft.<\/p>\n<p>The tools were Clovis \u2014 the name given to a widespread stone tool tradition found across North America and dated to roughly 13,000 to 12,600 years ago, one of the oldest well-documented technological traditions on the continent.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_4\"><\/div>\n<p>The Clovis people had, for much of the twentieth century, occupied the center of the debate about who the first Americans were and when they arrived.<\/p>\n<p>Finding a burial associated with Clovis artifacts was already extraordinary.<\/p>\n<p>Finding a child&#8217;s burial \u2014 with this level of care, this number of artifacts, this evident investment of the community&#8217;s material and emotional resources \u2014 was unprecedented.<\/p>\n<p>The site sat undiscovered under the Montana hillside for more than twelve thousand years.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_5\"><\/div>\n<p>When it was found, it changed what scientists thought they knew about the first peoples of the Americas.<\/p>\n<p>But the most important thing the child would reveal \u2014 the thing that would eventually put his name in scientific journals around the world and force a horizon seems both close and enormous at the same time.<\/p>\n<p>In 1968, two construction workers \u2014 Ben Hargis and Calvin Sarver \u2014 were working on a property owned by the Anzick family when they uncovered what appeared to be an unusual concentration of soil and material in a natural rock shelter or overhang on the hillside.<\/p>\n<p>The material they disturbed included human bone fragments and the stone and bone artifacts that would eventually be identified as among the most significant archaeological finds in North American prehistory.<\/p>\n<p>The circumstances of the care for the dead that is among our species&#8217; oldest documented behaviors.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>The radiocarbon dates obtained from the human remains and the associated materials securely dated Clovis sites fall within a window of perhaps 13,000 to 12,600 years before the present \u2014 and the technological consistency across that huge geographic area was striking.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>For most of the twentieth century, the dominant model for the first peopling of the Americas \u2014 the Clovis-first hypothesis \u2014 held that Clovis people were the first Americans.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_23\"><\/div>\n<p>Under this model, people crossed from northeastern Asia into Alaska via the Bering land bridge when sea levels were low enough to expose the broad grassy plain called Beringia, then moved southward through a corridor that opened between the retreating Laurentide and Cordilleran ice sheets as the glaciers began to melt, and eventually spread across the continent with a speed and geographic breadth that the distribution of Clovis sites seemed to support.<\/p>\n<p>This model was attractive, relatively well-supported by the evidence that had accumulated by the mid-twentieth century, and widely taught.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_24\"><\/div>\n<p>It had a satisfying narrative clarity: the first Americans came from Asia, crossed a land bridge, developed Clovis technology, spread across the continent, and became the ancestors of the diverse Native American peoples who would eventually be encountered by European explorers.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>The Anzick burial fit neatly into the Clovis-first framework as it was understood in the late twentieth century.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_25\"><\/div>\n<p>A child buried with Clovis artifacts in Montana was, under that framework, evidence of the earliest Americans \u2014 people who had recently arrived from Asia, were spreading across the continent, were burying their dead with care and ceremony, and were leaving behind the tools that defined their technological tradition.<\/p>\n<p>But even before the DNA analysis of the Anzick child transformed the debate, the Clovis-first model had been coming under sustained pressure from archaeological evidence that did from those of later Native American populations and to show closer resemblance to skulls from other parts of the world, particularly from southeastern Asia or even from ancient European archaeologists, and it faced numerous empirical and logical objections \u2014 the chronological gap between Solutrean and Clovis was thousands of years; no convincing intermediate sites had been found; the technology, while superficially similar, was not identical; and no ancient genetic evidence supported a European contribution to early American populations.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_33\"><\/div>\n<p>But the hypothesis attracted popular attention, partly because it was dramatic and counterintuitive, and it contributed to a broader cultural narrative in some quarters that questioned whether Indigenous American peoples were really the first and deepest-rooted inhabitants of the Western Hemisphere.<\/p>\n<p>The genome of the Anzick child would address this hypothesis directly \u2014 and definitively.<\/p>\n<p>The Technology That Made It Possible<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_34\"><\/div>\n<p>Ancient DNA analysis \u2014 the extraction and sequencing of genetic material from the physical remains of organisms that died long ago \u2014 is a science that did not exist in any practical sense before the 1980s, was limited and unreliable through most of the 1990s, and became genuinely powerful only in the first decade of the twenty-first century.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>The challenge of working with ancient DNA is fundamental: DNA is not a stable molecule.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" near-complete ancient genomes from samples tens of thousands of years old.<\/p>\n<p>The first complete Neanderthal genome was published in 2010.<\/p>\n<p>Ancient genomes from early modern humans in populations was substantially smaller than the distance between his genome and populations from any other part of the world \u2014 from Europe, from Africa, from Asia, from anywhere.<\/p>\n<div left little or no genetic trace in modern Indigenous populations?<\/p>\n<p>The ancient genomic data from the Americas has gradually suggested a complex answer.<\/p>\n<p>Most modern Native American populations appear to descend from a founding population that entered the Americas from Asia, with the Anzick-1 genome fitting within the range of that founding population.<\/p>\n<div
