all of the demographics and all of the population tree diagrams and all of the routes and dates and model comparisons eventually return to a specific physical reality: a very small skeleton, found in a prehistoric hearth in Alaska, belonging to an infant who had lived approximately six weeks to three months and who had been buried with the care that the people who loved her could damaged by eleven and a half millennia of burial \u2014 was still legible enough to reveal something that no amount of stone tool analysis or radiocarbon dating or isotopic study could have shown: that the first Americans were more diverse, their history more complex, their differentiation from each other more ancient, than the models of the twentieth century had imagined.<\/p>\n<div that the Tanana Valley was the traditional territory of Athabascan communities who had both a legal interest in the treatment of ancient remains found within that territory and a cultural and terms of their community&#8217;s historical understanding, and about how the scientific findings should be communicated publicly, were discussed as part of an ongoing relationship between the valley is wide and flat, bounded by mountain ranges that are visible on clear days from distances that make the mountains seem close even when they are not.<\/p>\n<p>The river \u2014 a tributary of the Tanana \u2014 runs through the valley, cutting through the glacial sediments that have accumulated since the Ice Age.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_170\"><\/div>\n<p>The vegetation is the characteristic subarctic mix of black spruce, white spruce, birch, and willow, with wetlands in the subarctic in the twenty-first century, maintaining connections to the land and the river and the fish runs that have sustained human life in this region for as long as anyone can document.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_174\"><\/div>\n<p>The infant buried in the hearth at Upward Sun River was part of a community that used this landscape in ways that were probably not entirely unlike the ways that Athabascan communities have used it in more recent times \u2014 following the salmon runs, hunting the mammals of the forest and the open country, moving through a familiar landscape with knowledge built up over generations of careful attention.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>The specific cultural forms of that ancient community are not recoverable.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_175\"><\/div>\n<p>The specific language they spoke, the specific ceremonies they conducted, Alaska, sequenced her DNA, and discovered a lost lineage of ancient people who were different from Native Americans.<\/p>\n<p>This version is wrong in its most important detail, and the detail matters.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_178\"><\/div>\n<p>The Ancient Beringian lineage was not different from Native appropriate terms for scientific discussion, and they reflect the legitimate needs of science to abstract from the specific to the general, to treat individuals as data points in the larger patterns
