of the early 2000s might be.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>Dating Something Older Than The Accepted Story<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_49\"><\/div>\n<p>The original radiocarbon dates from the Manis site had produced ages in the range that placed the site at or just before the Clovis horizon.<\/p>\n<p>But those dates came from methods and materials that were not optimal for establishing the precise age of remains this old and this potentially important.<\/p>\n<p>By the late 1990s and early 2000s, accelerator mass spectrometry \u2014 AMS radiocarbon dating \u2014 had become the standard method for dating small or precious organic samples.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_50\"><\/div>\n<p>Conventional radiocarbon dating required relatively large samples and measured the radioactive decay of carbon-14 in those samples over time.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>AMS dating worked differently: it directly counted the individual carbon-14 atoms in a sample, using a particle accelerator to separate them from the more abundant stable carbon isotopes.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_51\"><\/div>\n<p>This approach required far smaller samples \u2014 sometimes only a few milligrams of material \u2014 and was considerably more precise, with smaller uncertainty ranges on the resulting dates.<\/p>\n<p>Crucially, AMS dating could be applied directly to the collagen extracted from bone, rather than requiring larger bulk samples.<\/p>\n<p>Bone collagen, when it has survived intact, provides one of the most reliable organic materials for radiocarbon dating \u2014 it is less susceptible to the contamination that can affect charcoal or bulk organic sediment.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_52\"><\/div>\n<p>The team assembled by Michael Waters of Texas A&amp;M University \u2014 a specialist in the geology and dating of early American sites and one of the leading investigators of pre-Clovis evidence \u2014 resampled the Manis mastodon material using AMS methods.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>They extracted bone collagen from multiple elements of the mastodon&#8217;s skeleton and submitted those samples to radiocarbon laboratories for independent analysis.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_53\"><\/div>\n<p>The results were consistent and precise.<\/p>\n<p>The mastodon dated to approximately 13,800 to 13,900 calibrated years before the present.<\/p>\n<p>This is where it is important to be clear about what &#8220;calibrated&#8221; means and why it matters.<\/p>\n<p>Radiocarbon dating does not directly measure calendar years.<\/p>\n<p>It measures the ratio of carbon-14 to stable carbon isotopes in a sample and compares that ratio to the ratio expected in a living organism at the same time.<\/p>\n<div data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_55\"><\/div>\n<p>It varies in response to changes in cosmic ray intensity, solar activity, and other factors.<\/p>\n<p>If you simply assume that the atmospheric carbon-14 ratio was always the same as today, the raw radiocarbon dates will be systematically off.<\/p>\n<p>Calibration corrects for these variations using records of atmospheric carbon-14 concentrations derived from tree rings, coral, cave formations, and other independent archives.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_56\"><\/div>\n<p>For samples from the late Pleistocene, calibration curves can shift apparent ages by several hundred years.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>The difference between the uncalibrated radiocarbon age of the Manis mastodon and its calibrated calendar age \u2014 the true number of years before the present \u2014 is meaningful: a sample that reads as approximately 12,000 radiocarbon years before present might calibrate to approximately 13,800 to 14,000 calendar years before present, depending on which calibration curve is used and what the specific measurement uncertainty is.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_57\"><\/div>\n<p>When the Waters team published their results in 2011 in the journal Science, the calibrated age of the mastodon was established at approximately 13,800 years before the present \u2014 with the range of dates from different samples and different calibration approaches clustering around this figure.<\/p>\n<p>Some analyses produced results slightly younger, some slightly older, but the overall picture was consistent: this mastodon died roughly 13,800 to 13,900 calibrated years ago.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_58\"><\/div>\n<p>The Clovis horizon, using the currently accepted dates, falls at approximately 13,000 to 13,200 calibrated years before the present.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>The Manis mastodon was older than Clovis by somewhere in the range of several hundred to approximately 900 years, depending on which Clovis dates and which Manis calibrated age estimate are used for comparison.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_59\"><\/div>\n<p>This was not a small difference.<\/p>\n<p>In human terms, a gap of several hundred years represents many generations \u2014 enough time for major changes in population size, geographic range, technology, and subsistence strategy.<\/p>\n<p>The Manis site was not just a slightly earlier version of Clovis; it was genuinely older, representing a period of American prehistory before the Clovis tradition as we know it had developed.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_60\"><\/div>\n<p>But the age alone, while crucial, was not sufficient to establish the hunting interpretation.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>The date confirmed that the mastodon had died before Clovis.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_61\"><\/div>\n<p>It did not, by itself, prove that the embedded bone fragments were human-made, or that they were contemporaneous with the mastodon rather than introduced later by geological processes.<\/p>\n<p>For that, different evidence was required.<\/p>\n<p>Thirteen Thousand Nine Hundred Years<\/p>\n<p>Before moving to the CT work that would finally bring the physical evidence into focus, it is worth dwelling for a moment on what 13,800 to 13,900 calibrated years before the present actually means in human terms \u2014 because it is a span of time that is easy to state and very hard to genuinely absorb.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_62\"><\/div>\n<p>The oldest known writing in the world dates to approximately 5,000 to 5,500 years ago.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>The pyramids of Giza were built roughly 4,500 years ago.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_63\"><\/div>\n<p>The Bronze Age in Europe began approximately 4,500 to 5,000 years ago.<\/p>\n<p>The Roman Empire at its height existed roughly 2,000 years ago.<\/p>\n<p>All of recorded human history \u2014 everything we know about human civilization from written records, from stone inscriptions, from administrative documents, from literature \u2014 fits within a window of approximately 5,500 years.<\/p>\n<p>The Manis mastodon predates the beginning of that window by more than 8,000 years.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_64\"><\/div>\n<p>The people who were alive when this mastodon was killed, and who may have been responsible for the bone fragments embedded in its rib, lived in a world that was recognizably different from any world described in any written record.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>The glaciers that had covered much of North America during the Last Glacial Maximum had retreated substantially, but they had not disappeared.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_65\"><\/div>\n<p>Sea levels were still substantially lower than they are today \u2014 not by the 120 meters of the glacial maximum, but perhaps by 70 to 80 meters, which meant that the Olympic Peninsula&#8217;s coastline extended further into what is now the Pacific than it does today.<\/p>\n<p>The Strait of Juan de Fuca, which today separates the Olympic Peninsula from Vancouver Island, may have been a narrower and shallower passage than it is now.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_66\"><\/div>\n<p>The animals of the late Pleistocene Pacific Northwest included species that exist nowhere on earth today.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>Mastodons were among them.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_67\"><\/div>\n<p>So were mammoths, though mammoths preferred more open, grassland-like environments than the forested margins where mastodons browsed.<\/p>\n<p>Giant ground sloths, which could reach the size of modern elephants, were present.<\/p>\n<p>Short-faced bears \u2014 the largest bears ever to live in North America, substantially bigger than modern grizzlies \u2014 occupied the landscape.<\/p>\n<p>American horses and camels, different from their Old World relatives, were part of the fauna.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_68\"><\/div>\n<p>The people who lived in this landscape \u2014 who may have been responsible for driving a bone projectile point into the rib of a mastodon near what is now Sequim, Washington, approximately 13,900 years ago \u2014 were not living in a world that has any close modern equivalent.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>They were genuinely pioneering territory: moving through landscapes where the ecological communities were still in flux, where the large animals they encountered had likely never seen human hunters before, and where the specific resources and challenges of the Pacific Northwest coast and hinterland were very different from what we see today.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_69\"><\/div>\n<p>The AMS dates from the Manis site established when this moment occurred.<\/p>\n<p>The CT scanning that came next began to establish what happened.<\/p>\n<p>Looking Inside Without Destroying The Evidence<\/p>\n<p>The fragments embedded in the mastodon rib presented an immediate practical problem: how do you study them without destroying the evidence?<\/p>\n<p>The rib itself \u2014 the context for the embedded fragments \u2014 was irreplaceable.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_70\"><\/div>\n<p>It was a unique specimen.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>Cutting it open to remove and examine the fragments would destroy the geometric relationship between the fragments and the rib wall \u2014 the relationship that was itself part of the evidence.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_71\"><\/div>\n<p>You would know the chemical composition of the fragments, but you would lose the spatial data that described how they had entered the bone and at what angle.<\/p>\n<p>The solution was to look inside without cutting: to use X-ray-based imaging to visualize the internal structure of the rib and the fragments without physically disturbing either one.<\/p>\n<p>This is what high-resolution CT scanning makes possible, and by the time the Waters team began their modern study of the Manis site, CT scanning technology had advanced far beyond the clinical scanners used in medical diagnosis.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_72\"><\/div>\n<p>Industrial CT scanners \u2014 designed for non-destructive testing of manufactured parts, the inspection of archaeological specimens, and similar applications \u2014 could produce resolutions of tens or hundreds of micrometers: fine enough to image individual bone trabeculae, the microscopic lattice of tiny struts that forms the interior scaffolding of mammal bone.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>CT scanning works by passing X-rays through an object from many different angles and using the differences in X-ray absorption to reconstruct a three-dimensional model of the object&#8217;s internal structure.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_73\"><\/div>\n<p>Dense materials \u2014 like cortical bone, or the compact bone of a weapon tip \u2014 absorb X-rays more strongly than less dense materials like the trabecular interior of a rib.<\/p>\n<p>The resulting CT images show these differences in density as differences in brightness, creating a detailed map of the internal architecture of the specimen.<\/p>\n<p>For the Manis rib, high-resolution CT scanning could do several things that ordinary visual inspection or conventional X-rays could not.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_74\"><\/div>\n<p>It could reveal the three-dimensional shape of the embedded fragments without removing them.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>It could show the geometry of the penetration channel \u2014 the path through which the fragments had entered the rib \u2014 and establish whether that geometry was consistent with an impact from outside the body rather than natural bone displacement.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_75\"><\/div>\n<p>It could document the density of the embedded material and compare it to the density of the surrounding rib bone, helping to establish whether the fragments were foreign to the rib or simply part of it.<\/p>\n<p>And it could do all of this without touching the specimen.<\/p>\n<p>The Waters team, working with co-authors from multiple institutions, applied high-resolution CT scanning to the Manis rib as part of their 2011 Science study.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_76\"><\/div>\n<p>The results were revelatory.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>Fragments That Did Not Look Like A Weapon<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_77\"><\/div>\n<p>The first thing the CT scans revealed was the full extent of the embedded material.<\/p>\n<p>What visual inspection had suggested was a cluster of fragments \u2014 a few pieces of dense bone penetrating the rib \u2014 turned out to be more complex than it had appeared.<\/p>\n<p>The CT images showed that the embedded material occupied a channel that had been driven through the cortical bone of the rib&#8217;s outer surface and into the trabecular interior.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_78\"><\/div>\n<p>The channel was roughly conical in shape, wider at the entry point and tapering toward the interior \u2014 consistent with an impact that had driven a pointed object through the outer wall and into the body of the rib.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>The embedded fragments were multiple.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_79\"><\/div>\n<p>They were not a single intact object.<\/p>\n<p>They were the shattered remains of whatever had entered the rib \u2014 a tip that had broken into pieces on impact, with those pieces remaining distributed through the penetration channel while the rest of the weapon \u2014 whatever attached to the tip and gave it its delivery force \u2014 had pulled free or fallen away.<\/p>\n<p>This fragmentation was, in retrospect, entirely predictable.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_80\"><\/div>\n<p>When a pointed object strikes bone with sufficient force to penetrate it, the tip of the object \u2014 which takes the full impact and must push through rather than deflect \u2014 is subject to extreme stress concentration.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>The rest of the weapon behind the tip is under tension as it transmits force forward; the tip itself is under compression as it drives into the bone.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_81\"><\/div>\n<p>If the tip material is hard but brittle \u2014 and dense bone is both hard and brittle \u2014 the result of a direct bone-to-bone impact is fracture: the tip shatters into fragments that remain in the wound channel while the shaft of the weapon, being behind the impact and under different stress conditions, separates from the tip and may be pulled free.<\/p>\n<p>Hunters who have used bone-tipped weapons \u2014 historically and in the present \u2014 describe exactly this phenomenon.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_82\"><\/div>\n<p>The bone tip breaks off in the wound.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>Sometimes that contributes to the lethality of the weapon, keeping a fragment of pointed material inside the body where it can cause additional damage.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_83\"><\/div>\n<p>Sometimes it simply means the tip is lost.<\/p>\n<p>In either case, the fragments remain in the wound while the delivery system is recovered.<\/p>\n<p>For the Manis mastodon, this meant that thirteen thousand nine hundred years after the event, the fragments of the broken tip were still exactly where they had ended up in the moment of impact \u2014 locked inside the rib, distributed through the penetration channel, preserved by the specific conditions of the site and the specific accident of the tip striking bone rather than passing between the ribs or lodging in soft tissue that would not have survived.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_84\"><\/div>\n<p>But the fragments, as the CT images showed them, were exactly that: fragments.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>They did not, in the CT images alone, look like a weapon.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_85\"><\/div>\n<p>They looked like scattered pieces of dense bone material distributed through a channel in the rib.<\/p>\n<p>The CT images established the geometry of the penetration and the density of the embedded material.<\/p>\n<p>They did not, by themselves, reveal the shape of the original object.<\/p>\n<p>That would require more work.<\/p>\n<p>And the CT images raised a question that a different kind of analysis would have to answer: what was the embedded material made of?<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_86\"><\/div>\n<p>What The Bone Itself Was Made From<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>The density of the embedded fragments, visible in the CT images, suggested that the material was compact cortical bone \u2014 the dense outer layer of a mammal&#8217;s skeleton, as opposed to the more porous trabecular bone that fills the interior of most bones.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_87\"><\/div>\n<p>This density was one of the first indicators that the embedded material was not part of the mastodon rib itself: the rib&#8217;s own cortical bone showed in the CT images as a relatively uniform layer surrounding the more open trabecular interior, while the embedded fragments were distributed through a channel that cut across this architecture.<\/p>\n<p>The fragments were denser than the surrounding trabecular bone and had a different texture and geometry than the cortical layer.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_88\"><\/div>\n<p>But knowing that the embedded material was compact bone did not tell the researchers where that bone had come from.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>It could have been from the mastodon itself \u2014 a piece of the animal&#8217;s own skeleton that had migrated into the rib through post-mortem processes.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_89\"><\/div>\n<p>It could have been from a different part of the same individual, broken during death or decomposition and compacted into the rib by sediment pressure.<\/p>\n<p>Or it could have been from a completely different individual \u2014 a weapon made from bone, introduced from outside the animal&#8217;s body by a deliberate act.<\/p>\n<p>To distinguish between these possibilities, the Waters team applied biomolecular analysis \u2014 specifically, protein analysis \u2014 to the embedded fragments.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_90\"><\/div>\n<p>Proteins, like DNA, carry molecular signatures that can distinguish between individuals and between species.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>In ancient samples, where DNA degradation often prevents successful sequencing, proteins can survive for much longer \u2014 their molecular structure is more stable than the double helix of DNA, and they can persist in mineralized bone for tens of thousands of years under favorable conditions.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_91\"><\/div>\n<p>Protein mass spectrometry \u2014 a technique that identifies proteins by their mass and charge characteristics, breaking proteins into their component peptide fragments and reading those fragments against reference databases \u2014 can identify the species from which a protein derived and, in some cases, provide information about the specific tissue type.<\/p>\n<p>The protein analysis applied to the embedded fragments produced a clear result: the fragments were mastodon bone.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_92\"><\/div>\n<p>Not from some other animal, not from an unrelated species, but from a mastodon \u2014 Mammut americanum.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>This finding had two important implications.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_93\"><\/div>\n<p>First, it established that the embedded material was bone \u2014 compact, dense mammal bone \u2014 not mineral material that had invaded the rib through geological processes.<\/p>\n<p>Second, it established that the bone was mastodon bone \u2014 which meant it was either from the same individual whose rib it was embedded in, or from a different mastodon.<\/p>\n<p>And here the geological and spatial analysis became critical: the geometry of the penetration, which the CT images had documented so precisely, was inconsistent with the embedded fragments having originated from the same rib.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_94\"><\/div>\n<p>They had entered the rib from outside.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>They were intrusive.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_95\"><\/div>\n<p>They had been driven in.<\/p>\n<p>The question of whether they came from the same mastodon or from a different mastodon was resolved through the 3D reconstruction work that came later, in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>But even in 2011, the protein analysis established something that was already significant: the embedded material was mastodon bone that had been driven into another mastodon&#8217;s rib from outside, through a channel that the CT images showed was consistent with an impact from a pointed object.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_96\"><\/div>\n<p>The Waters team published these findings in the 2011 Science paper.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>The paper argued that the evidence was consistent with a human-made bone projectile point having been driven into the mastodon&#8217;s rib \u2014 pre-Clovis evidence of mastodon hunting on the Pacific Coast of North America.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_97\"><\/div>\n<p>The case was substantially stronger than anything that had been published about the
