us in every way that matters, capable of complex thought, complex social organization, complex technology.<\/p>\n<p>The pond beneath which they were buried had preserved them in ways that would take years of careful excavation to fully understand.<\/p>\n<p>A Cemetery Under Peat<\/p>\n<p>The scale of what lay beneath Windover Pond was not immediately apparent.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" recover small objects and bone fragments.<\/p>\n<p>The stability of the dry soil holds the positions of objects and human remains relatively fixed until the excavation reaches them.<\/p>\n<div material carefully and keeping the recovered organic materials wet while they were processed and documented.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>The screening was essential.<\/p>\n<div approximately 37 infants and very young children.<\/p>\n<p>Roughly 70 children and adolescents of various ages.<\/p>\n<p>About 61 adults.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" stature estimated at about 5 feet 9 inches \u2014 175 centimeters \u2014 which is robust for any prehistoric population and suggests a nutritionally adequate diet.<\/p>\n<p>Adult females averaged approximately 5 feet 5 inches, or about 165 centimeters.<\/p>\n<p>These were physically capable people, their skeletons showing the muscular development consistent with the physically demanding lives of hunter-gatherers who moved through the landscape on foot, carrying their possessions and tools, processing food by hand and with stone implements.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_44\"><\/div>\n<p>The age distribution across the full cemetery \u2014 from newborns to individuals in their sixties \u2014 has particular significance for what it suggests about the community that used the pond as a burial site.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>Infant and child mortality in prehistoric populations was high, but cases, children and infants were buried with more grave goods than adults \u2014 a pattern that the excavation documented and that speaks to the value the community placed on even its youngest and would have been painful and limiting but that did not prevent continued participation in the life of the community.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" community&#8217;s values, was an adolescent male of approximately fifteen years.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_47\"><\/div>\n<p>He had spina bifida \u2014 a congenital condition involving incomplete closure of the spinal cord&#8217;s protective covering \u2014 in a form severe enough that it almost certainly left him paralyzed below the waist.<\/p>\n<p>For a hunter-gatherer community that moved frequently, that required physical participation in food procurement, that had no carts or wheelchairs or modern mobility aids, supporting an went well beyond what was strictly necessary for the community&#8217;s economic survival.<\/p>\n<p>The fifteen years he lived \u2014 recorded in the bones and the growth lines and the pathology of his skeleton \u2014 required a community that chose to invest in an individual who could not contribute in the ways that most members of a mobile hunter-gatherer band could contribute.<\/p>\n<div pond with the same care and attention as everyone else \u2014 as people who had walked and hunted and woven and fished, as people whose bodies bore the marks of full physical engagement with their is not visible on the surface.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>It requires either accident \u2014 a backhoe hitting something unexpected \u2014 or deliberate archaeological investigation to reveal itself.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_317\"><\/div>\n<p>What makes the Windover pond different from the thousands of similar ponds across the Florida landscape is not what is visible.<\/p>\n<p>It is what is preserved beneath the surface.<\/p>\n<p>The peat environment that happened to exist there, in that specific combination of waterlogging and chemistry, maintained the biological and material archive of a community for 8,000 years while comparable material everywhere else in Florida disappeared.<\/p>\n<div buried there were not trying to preserve themselves for the benefit of future science.<\/p>\n<p>They were burying their dead in a specific pond that their community understood as the appropriate place could be.<\/p>\n<p>It is a window, not a mirror.<\/p>\n<p>But it is more than any other site from this period and this place has provided, and it has changed \u2014 permanently and irreversibly \u2014 what archaeology thought it knew about the lives of the first Floridians.<\/p>\n<p>A road was supposed to cross this patch of Florida ground.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_322\"><\/div>\n<p>Instead, a cemetery was found.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>And somewhere beneath the dark water, in the peat that has not been opened, the people buried there continue to be what they have always been: members of a community that cared for them in life, that placed them in a specific pond in a specific orientation, that wrapped them and anchored them and sent them into the ground.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_323\"><\/div>\n<p>The pond holds what the pond holds.<\/p>\n<p>The rest belongs to time, and to whatever future arrives to ask the questions that have not yet been formed.<\/p>\n<p>The Site In Context \u2014 Why Windover Stands Alone<\/p>\n<p>Windover&#8217;s position in the history of North American archaeology is not simply a matter of exceptional preservation.<\/p>\n<p>It is also a matter of timing, location, and the specific convergence of scientific capacity and archaeological opportunity that the excavations represented.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_324\"><\/div>\n<p>At the time the Windover excavations were conducted \u2014 1984, 1985, and 1986 \u2014 ancient DNA science was in its infancy.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>The polymerase chain reaction was being developed at exactly the same moment.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" applied systematically to the warm-water sites of the South.<\/p>\n<p>The combination of a developer willing to halt construction, an archaeologist quick enough to recognize the site&#8217;s potential, an institutional support system at Florida State University capable of mounting a major multidisciplinary field project, and a scientific community at exactly the moment when the tools needed to make the most of the opportunity were becoming available \u2014 this combination was, in retrospect, improbable.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" different legal and ethical framework and will produce knowledge through a different process of consultation and consent.<\/p>\n<p>Whether that process will yield comparable depth of knowledge is an of affiliated communities limit the scope of analysis.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>It might yield different knowledge, if the questions asked are shaped by the concerns of descendant communities as well as by the questions of the scientific community.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_331\"><\/div>\n<p>It might, in some respects, yield better knowledge, if the integration of Indigenous perspectives illuminates dimensions of the evidence that archaeology conducted solely within a Western scientific framework would miss.<\/p>\n<p>What it will not yield is the same as Windover, because no two excavations are the same and no two preservation environments are the same and no two moments in history are the same.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_332\"><\/div>\n<p>The Pond In The Neighborhood<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>Windover Farms was built.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_333\"><\/div>\n<p>The houses are there, the streets are there, the infrastructure of a Florida residential subdivision surrounds the small pond that is Windover Pond.<\/p>\n<p>Residents of the neighborhood live their ordinary lives around the edges of what is, beneath the surface, one of the most significant archaeological sites in North America.<\/p>\n<p>They may know this, or they may not.<\/p>\n<p>They may drive past the pond in the morning without thinking about what is under the water.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_334\"><\/div>\n<p>They may see a heron standing at the pond&#8217;s edge and think nothing beyond the ordinary pleasure of seeing a wading bird in its habitat.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>The pond that looked like nothing still looks like nothing from the outside.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_335\"><\/div>\n<p>The dark water, the vegetation at the margins, the flat Florida light reflecting off the surface in the late afternoon tissue inside their skulls \u2014 tissue that researchers in the 1980s were astonished to find could still yield biological information after eight millennia in a Florida pond.<\/p>\n<div interior.<\/p>\n<p>It will hold its contents until some future event \u2014 excavation, construction, hydrological change \u2014 opens it.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_340\"><\/div>\n<p>When that happens, whatever happens then will be shaped by questions and tools and ethical frameworks that do not yet
