northeastern Siberia called the Yana.<\/p>\n<p>It flows north from its headwaters through a landscape that even today qualifies as one of the most remote and hostile places on Earth \u2014 a vast tundra of permafrost and ancient frozen ground, bisected by river channels that run wild in summer and lock up solid in the darkness of Arctic winter.<\/p>\n<p>The Yana drains eventually into the Laptev Sea, one of the coldest and most ice-choked bodies of water on the planet.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing about this country is gentle.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_3\"><\/div>\n<p>About 100 kilometers south of where the Yana empties into the Arctic Ocean, on a flat alluvial terrace along the river&#8217;s left bank, there is a site that archaeologists have named the Yana Rhinoceros Horn Site.<\/p>\n<p>It sits at roughly 70 degrees and 43 minutes north latitude.<\/p>\n<p>The Arctic Circle is at 66 degrees.<\/p>\n<p>This site is above it.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_4\"><\/div>\n<p>Well above it.<\/p>\n<p>And in the deep frozen sediment of that terrace, archaeologists found two teeth.<\/p>\n<p>Tiny teeth.<\/p>\n<p>Milk teeth.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_5\"><\/div>\n<p>The kind of teeth that fall out of children&#8217;s mouths all over the world, tiny hard objects that parents set aside in little boxes or tuck under pillows in cultures where the tooth fairy has a role.<\/p>\n<p>Deciduous teeth \u2014 the baby teeth that children shed between roughly six and twelve years of age as their adult dentition grows in beneath them.<\/p>\n<p>These two teeth, from what the genetic evidence later revealed were two different boys, had been shed or lost at this place on the edge of the Arctic world.<\/p>\n<p>Thirty-one thousand years ago.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_6\"><\/div>\n<p>The number requires a moment.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>Not three thousand years.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_7\"><\/div>\n<p>Not thirteen thousand years.<\/p>\n<p>Thirty-one thousand years before the present day, at a time when most of northern Europe was buried under kilometers of glacial ice, when the English Channel did not exist, when most of what is now the United States was still being sculpted by glaciers, when anatomically modern humans had only recently spread through Europe and were still in the process of replacing or absorbing the last Neanderthals \u2014 at that extraordinarily distant moment in time, two children were alive above the Arctic Circle in Siberia.<\/p>\n<p>They were part of a community.<\/p>\n<p>They played, presumably.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_8\"><\/div>\n<p>They shed their milk teeth.<\/p>\n<p>And when researchers extracted DNA from those tiny preserved teeth in 2019, the genetic code inside them revealed something that nobody expected.<\/p>\n<p>These children belonged to a population that had never been identified before.<\/p>\n<p>A group of humans so distinct, so genetically different from any other ancient population that scientists had studied, that they represented an entirely new branch of the human family tree from this period.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_9\"><\/div>\n<p>The team who sequenced their genomes named them the Ancient North Siberians.<\/p>\n<p>And then the story got stranger still.<\/p>\n<p>Because the Ancient North Siberians \u2014 these people who lived and died in the deep frozen far north of the Pleistocene world \u2014 turned out to be part of the story of how the Americas were first settled.<\/p>\n<p>Their genetic signature appears in the ancestry of the populations that would eventually cross into the New World and give rise to the Indigenous peoples of North and South America.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_10\"><\/div>\n<p>Two milk teeth from Ice Age children in one of the most forbidding places on Earth.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>DNA that had waited 31,000 years for a machine capable of reading it.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_11\"><\/div>\n<p>And a revelation that connected an Arctic community no one knew existed to one of the most important questions in the history of human migration.<\/p>\n<p>This is that story.<\/p>\n<p>The Place That Found Them First<\/p>\n<p>To understand the teeth, you have to understand the site.<\/p>\n<p>And to understand the site, you have to understand what it meant for human beings to be where these people were at the moment in history when they were there.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_12\"><\/div>\n<p>The Yana Rhinoceros Horn Site \u2014 almost always referred to in the scientific literature as Yana RHS \u2014 came to academic attention in a characteristically indirect way.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>A Russian geologist named Mikhail Dashtzeren was working in the region in 1993, doing what geologists do in that part of Siberia: looking at exposures in river banks, examining the sediment layers laid down over thousands of years, searching for fossils of the great animals of the Pleistocene that erode out of the permafrost wherever rivers cut through it.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_13\"><\/div>\n<p>What Dashtzeren found was not what he was looking for.<\/p>\n<p>On the left bank of the Yana River, protruding from the frozen sediment, was a carefully worked artifact: a foreshaft, the detachable front end of a spear, carved from the horn of a woolly rhinoceros.<\/p>\n<p>The Coelodonta antiquitatis \u2014 the woolly rhino \u2014 is one of the iconic animals of the Pleistocene.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_14\"><\/div>\n<p>It wore a coat of thick fur and carried two horns on its nose, and it roamed across the cold grasslands of Ice Age Europe and Asia in enormous numbers.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>It has been extinct for roughly ten thousand years.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_15\"><\/div>\n<p>Its horn is not something you find in modern contexts.<\/p>\n<p>Dashtzeren recognized the artifact as ancient.<\/p>\n<p>But the significance of what he had found took years to register fully.<\/p>\n<p>The artifact sat in the knowledge of the community and of local scientists without triggering a major archaeological investigation.<\/p>\n<p>It was not until 2001 \u2014 eight years later \u2014 that archaeologist Vladimir Pitulko of the Institute for the History of Material Culture of the Russian Academy of Sciences, working in St.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_16\"><\/div>\n<p>Petersburg, traveled to the site with Dashtzeren as his guide and conducted a systematic survey.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>What Pitulko found in 2001, and what his team excavated over the following years, was one of the most extraordinary archaeological sites in the world.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_17\"><\/div>\n<p>The cultural layer \u2014 the stratum of sediment that contains the evidence of human activity \u2014 was buried under about nine to ten meters of frozen ground.<\/p>\n<p>That frozen covering, combined with the permafrost that permeates the entire sediment column of the site, is what preserved the evidence so astonishingly well.<\/p>\n<p>The cold had acted as a deep-freeze for three decades of millennia.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_18\"><\/div>\n<p>Organic materials that would have rotted away in warmer climates had survived in the permafrost: ivory, antler, bone, wood \u2014 all of it intact.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>Excavations began formally in 2002 and continued across multiple seasons.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_19\"><\/div>\n<p>The inventory of what came out of the ground was staggering.<\/p>\n<p>More than 2,500 artifacts were recovered.<\/p>\n<p>Stone tools: flakes and points and scrapers in various stages of production.<\/p>\n<p>Items made of mammoth ivory: foreshafts for spears, points, needles.<\/p>\n<p>Items made from antler.<\/p>\n<p>Items made from animal bone, including the bones of mammoths, woolly rhinoceroses, horses, bison, and a remarkable variety of other animals that would have lived on the Mammoth Steppe \u2014 the great cold grassland ecosystem that extended across northern Eurasia during the Pleistocene.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_20\"><\/div>\n<p>Among the artifacts was something that drew particular attention: a fragment of what appeared to be a decorative ivory headband or hair ornament.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>Not utilitarian.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_21\"><\/div>\n<p>Not a tool.<\/p>\n<p>Something made for adornment, for beauty, for the kind of self-presentation that humans everywhere have engaged in for as long as they have been recognizably human.<\/p>\n<p>People who lived here, in this brutal latitude, in the Ice Age, were making and wearing personal ornaments.<\/p>\n<p>The site&#8217;s first major publication, in the journal Science in 2004 \u2014 co-authored by Pitulko and colleagues \u2014 announced the site&#8217;s existence to the broader scientific world and immediately established its significance.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_22\"><\/div>\n<p>The headline finding was simple and startling: human beings had been living above the Arctic Circle at roughly 71 degrees north latitude approximately 27,000 radiocarbon years before the present.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>Calibrated to calendar years, this placed the occupation at somewhere in the range of 30,000 to 32,000 years ago.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_23\"><\/div>\n<p>This was twice the age of any other human occupation known anywhere in any Arctic region.<\/p>\n<p>The previous record for the northernmost early human site had been well below the Arctic Circle.<\/p>\n<p>These people at Yana had pushed that threshold dramatically farther north and dramatically further back in time.<\/p>\n<p>The 2004 paper concluded with a statement that now reads as something of an understatement: &#8220;This site shows that people adapted to this harsh, high-latitude, Late Pleistocene environment much earlier than previously thought.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_24\"><\/div>\n<p>But for all its significance, the 2004 Yana paper was working without human remains.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>The site had yielded thousands of artifacts and hundreds of animal bones.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_25\"><\/div>\n<p>What it had not yielded, in the first years of excavation, was anything from the humans who made and used those artifacts.<\/p>\n<p>Everything that scientists knew about the Yana community came from what they had left behind, not from the people themselves.<\/p>\n<p>That changed when the teeth were found.<\/p>\n<p>What The Teeth Are \u2014 And Why They Matter<\/p>\n<p>At some point during the excavations at Yana RHS \u2014 in sediment layers dated to approximately 31,000 years ago, corresponding to what researchers estimate as about 31,600 calibrated years before present \u2014 excavators found two small teeth.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_26\"><\/div>\n<p>Milk teeth.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>Deciduous teeth.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_27\"><\/div>\n<p>Baby teeth.<\/p>\n<p>Two of them, from what turned out to be two different individuals.<\/p>\n<p>The genetic work published in 2019 would establish that both were boys, based on DNA from the X and Y chromosomes recovered from the tooth material.<\/p>\n<p>They were not the same child.<\/p>\n<p>They were two boys who had both shed a tooth at this site, in this place, during the same approximate period.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_28\"><\/div>\n<p>Deciduous teeth are shed between childhood and early adolescence.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>The specific tooth type matters: different baby teeth are lost at different ages, and the age of the child who lost a particular tooth can often be estimated from what type it is and the state of its root development.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_29\"><\/div>\n<p>The analysis of these two teeth suggested they came from children, though the precise ages were not definitively published in the available materials.<\/p>\n<p>Why do milk teeth matter for ancient DNA?<\/p>\n<p>This is worth explaining, because the decision to attempt DNA extraction from these particular objects \u2014 rather than seeking larger bone samples \u2014 was not arbitrary.<\/p>\n<p>Ancient DNA preservation is primarily a function of temperature, chemistry, and physical protection.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_30\"><\/div>\n<p>The permafrost conditions at Yana RHS had already demonstrated exceptional organic preservation: ivory, antler, and bone were coming out of the site in good condition.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>But tooth enamel \u2014 the hard, mineralized outer coating of a tooth \u2014 is the densest biological material in the human body.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_31\"><\/div>\n<p>It is more resistant to chemical degradation than bone, and the pulp chamber inside a tooth, protected by that enamel shell, can preserve cellular material including DNA better than most other tissue types in ancient specimens.<\/p>\n<p>The deciduous teeth at Yana, encased in enamel and embedded in frozen sediment for 31,000 years, were exceptional repositories of ancient biological information.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_32\"><\/div>\n<p>The DNA inside them \u2014 inside the dentine of the teeth themselves, in the remnant cellular material of the pulp \u2014 had survived in recoverable form.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>This is the miracle of permafrost preservation made concrete and comprehensible: a child&#8217;s tooth, lost in the Arctic 31,000 years ago, still carries the genetic blueprint of the child who lost it.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_33\"><\/div>\n<p>The question was what that blueprint would say.<\/p>\n<p>The World They Lived In<\/p>\n<p>Before the DNA story can be told properly, the world has to be reconstructed.<\/p>\n<p>Because the world that these children inhabited was so different from anything that exists today that it requires an act of imagination to place them in it \u2014 an imagination informed by evidence, by paleoclimate records and paleoecological reconstructions and the deep archive of the frozen Siberian ground.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_34\"><\/div>\n<p>Thirty-one thousand years ago, the Earth was in the depths of what geologists call the Last Glacial Period \u2014 the most recent Ice Age, which reached its maximum intensity around 20,000 years ago before beginning the long warming that produced the modern world.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>But 31,000 years ago, the ice was already extensive and the climate was already cold.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_35\"><\/div>\n<p>The situation was not yet at its worst, but it was severe.<\/p>\n<p>The northern hemisphere was dramatically different.<\/p>\n<p>The British Isles were connected to continental Europe by a broad plain of dry land.<\/p>\n<p>The North Sea did not exist.<\/p>\n<p>The Baltic was a frozen lake.<\/p>\n<p>The northeastern Siberia where the Yana site sits was not covered by glacial ice \u2014 the northeast Asian and Beringian regions were largely ice-free even during the glacial maximum, which is part of why they could support human populations \u2014 but the climate was genuinely Arctic in character, with temperatures averaging well below zero for most of the year.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_36\"><\/div>\n<p>The key ecological concept for understanding this world is the Mammoth Steppe.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>The Mammoth Steppe was not a steppe in the way we might picture a Central Asian grassland.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_37\"><\/div>\n<p>It was a cold, dry, highly productive grassland-tundra ecosystem that extended across vast areas of northern Eurasia and into Beringia \u2014 the land bridge connecting Siberia to Alaska \u2014 during the Pleistocene.<\/p>\n<p>The dominant vegetation was grasses, sedges, and herbs \u2014 not trees.<\/p>\n<p>Trees require sufficient warmth and moisture that the glacial north could not provide.<\/p>\n<p>But the grassland was rich.<\/p>\n<p>It supported enormous biomass.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_38\"><\/div>\n<p>Enormous in the literal sense: the animals that grazed it were some of the largest that have ever walked the Earth.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>Woolly mammoths.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_39\"><\/div>\n<p>These were not mythological creatures to the people at Yana RHS.<\/p>\n<p>They were meat.<\/p>\n<p>They were ivory.<\/p>\n<p>They were hides for shelter and clothing.<\/p>\n<p>The bones and ivory in the Yana archaeological layer come from multiple mammoth individuals \u2014 not just fossil remains that happened to be lying around, but animals that the community hunted and butchered, leaving behind a record of successful kills and careful resource extraction.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_40\"><\/div>\n<p>Woolly rhinoceroses \u2014 the same animal whose horn had first drawn attention to the site \u2014 were another large prey species.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>The fact that someone had the patience and the skill to carve a foreshaft from rhinoceros horn tells us something about the relationship between the hunters of Yana and the animals they pursued: these were not opportunistic scavengers but skilled hunters who took large and dangerous animals and then worked their remains into useful tools.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_41\"><\/div>\n<p>Wild horses.<\/p>\n<p>Bison.<\/p>\n<p>Reindeer.<\/p>\n<p>Musk oxen.<\/p>\n<p>The Mammoth Steppe supported a diversity of prey that would have fed communities across vast territories, and the evidence from Yana suggests a community engaged in hunting at a substantial scale.<\/p>\n<p>But here is what makes the Yana community particularly remarkable from a purely logistical standpoint: the hunting of mammoths and woolly rhinoceroses on the open steppe above the Arctic Circle, in a climate where winters plunged to extreme temperatures and where darkness dominated for months, required capabilities that go well beyond simply being brave and strong.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_42\"><\/div>\n<p>It required clothing.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>This is not a trivial point.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_43\"><\/div>\n<p>At Arctic temperatures, inadequately clothed humans die within hours.<\/p>\n<p>The people at Yana were not wearing animal skins thrown carelessly over their shoulders.<\/p>\n<p>The presence of bone needles among the Yana artifacts \u2014 some of them among the finest and most carefully made needle-like tools from the Upper Paleolithic \u2014 tells us they were making tailored, sewn garments.<\/p>\n<p>Clothing that fit the body closely, that trapped body heat, that could be layered against extreme cold.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_44\"><\/div>\n<p>The technology of Arctic cold-weather survival was already developed at Yana 31,000 years ago.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>It required shelter.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_45\"><\/div>\n<p>The wooden components of any structure they built would not survive on the open terrace unless protected by permafrost, and the evidence for the nature of their habitations is limited.<\/p>\n<p>But they were there, through multiple seasons, processing enormous quantities of animal remains.<\/p>\n<p>They had shelter of some kind.<\/p>\n<p>It required social organization.<\/p>\n<p>You do not hunt mammoths alone.<\/p>\n<p>The coordination of a mammoth hunt \u2014 the communication, the planning, the execution, the butchering and processing of an animal that can weigh six tons \u2014 requires multiple people working together with shared purpose and shared knowledge.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_46\"><\/div>\n<p>The community at Yana was large enough and organized enough to take on the largest prey animals in their ecosystem.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>And it required something that no artifact can directly show but that the presence of children in this community implies: the capacity to rear and protect young people through the Arctic winter.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_47\"><\/div>\n<p>Children are vulnerable.<\/p>\n<p>They require warmth, food, care, and time.<\/p>\n<p>In the most demanding environment humans had yet chosen to inhabit, this community was raising children.<\/p>\n<p>Two of those children lost their teeth at this site.<\/p>\n<p>And 31,000 years later, those teeth would tell the world something extraordinary about who these people were.<\/p>\n<p>The Site Before The DNA \u2014 Why Yana Already Changed Everything<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" &#8220;Remarkably, the Ancient North Siberians people are more closely related to Europeans than Asians and seem to have migrated all the way from Western Eurasia soon after the divergence between Europeans and Asians.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This is a striking finding that requires some unpacking.<\/p>\n<p>The branching of the human family tree \u2014 the sequence of population splits and divergences region spanning from the Pleistocene through the early Bronze Age, plus comparative data from 93 modern individuals from Alaska and western Siberia.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_74\"><\/div>\n<p>This broader scope is what allowed the team to trace the fate of the Ancient North Siberians after Yana.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>The study included the genome of a 10,000-year-old individual from the Kolyma River \u2014 another major river of northeastern Siberia, flowing north to the Kolyma1 individual lived more than 20,000 years after the Yana children, in the early Holocene rather than the deep Pleistocene.<\/p>\n<p>When Kolyma1&#8217;s genome was analyzed, it showed a combination of ancestries.<\/p>\n<p>One component of Kolyma1&#8217;s genetic heritage traced back to East Asian-related populations \u2014 the same broad source population that contributed the ancestry of most northeastern Siberian populations through the Holocene.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_76\"><\/div>\n<p>But another component showed a connection to the Ancient North Siberian lineage \u2014 a residual signature of the ancient population represented at Yana, diluted by subsequent mixing with East Asian-related A Continent<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>The question of how the Americas were first populated is one of the most debated questions in all of human prehistory.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" American groups, was related to East Asian populations \u2014 the broad family of peoples whose genetic heritage traces to the ancient populations of central and eastern from a discovery made before the Yana DNA study: the Mal&#8217;ta Boy, an ancient individual found near Lake Baikal in southern Siberia, dating to roughly 24,000 years ancestry.<\/p>\n<p>But where did the Ancient North Eurasians get their Western Eurasian-related genetics?<\/p>\n<p>The population history of this vast region in the deep Pleistocene was obscure.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_88\"><\/div>\n<p>The Mal&#8217;ta individual was the oldest, best-characterized example of this lineage, but his origins \u2014 the deeper history of the Ancient North Eurasians \u2014 remained uncertain.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>The Ancient North Siberians of Yana, it turns out, may
