the limestone of the Mendip Hills before reaching its innermost chambers.<\/p>\n<p>The walls are cool and damp.<\/p>\n<p>The temperature barely changes year-round.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_3\"><\/div>\n<p>The darkness is absolute once you leave the light behind.<\/p>\n<p>In 1903, during excavations inside this cave, a workman&#8217;s tool struck something that was neither limestone nor sediment.<\/p>\n<p>Bones emerged from the earth.<\/p>\n<p>Human bones.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_4\"><\/div>\n<p>A skull, portions of a skeleton \u2014 and then something more: the almost complete remains of a person who had died in this cave roughly ten millennia before the workmen arrived.<\/p>\n<p>The skeleton was given a name that stuck: Cheddar Man.<\/p>\n<p>Not for any personal characteristic, not for anything the bones revealed about the person who had been buried or had died here, but simply because the cave was in Cheddar, and the cheese came from Cheddar, and the name was apt in the way that simple geographical labels can be.<\/p>\n<p>The man from Cheddar.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_5\"><\/div>\n<p>For more than a century, scientists studied those bones.<\/p>\n<p>They measured the skull with calipers.<\/p>\n<p>They examined the teeth, which were surprisingly good for someone who had died around the age of twenty-three to twenty-six.<\/p>\n<p>They analyzed the skeleton&#8217;s proportions and concluded that this person had stood about five feet five inches tall, had been reasonably well-nourished, and had lived sometime around 9,000 years before the common era \u2014 roughly 10,000 years before the moment you are reading this.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" History Museum in London announced the results of a full genome sequencing of Cheddar Man&#8217;s DNA \u2014 the first complete genome sequenced from the oldest near-complete skeleton found in Britain.<\/p>\n<p>What they found was striking enough that it reached every major news outlet in the world within twenty-four hours.<\/p>\n<p>Cheddar Man had dark to black skin pigmentation.<\/p>\n<p>He had blue eyes.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_8\"><\/div>\n<p>He had dark, curly hair.<\/p>\n<p>The combination was the opposite of what most people assumed when they imagined someone called &#8220;the first Briton.&#8221; The expectation \u2014 tacit, unexamined, embedded in decades of museum displays and popular reconstructions \u2014 had been fair skin.<\/p>\n<p>What the DNA said was something entirely different.<\/p>\n<p>The finding was not simply a curiosity about one individual.<\/p>\n<div over the past two decades: the story of who the Europeans of the deep past actually were, where they came from, and why they looked nothing like the people who later came to occupy the same territory.<\/p>\n<p>That story begins in a limestone cave.<\/p>\n<p>It ends somewhere larger.<\/p>\n<p>Gough&#8217;s Cave And What Lives In The Dark<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_10\"><\/div>\n<p>Cheddar Gorge is one of the more dramatic landscapes in the otherwise gentle English county of Somerset.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>The gorge cuts through the Mendip Hills, a plateau of carboniferous limestone that was formed by ancient shallow seas, and the walls on either side of the road through the gorge rise to heights of more than 130 meters.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_11\"><\/div>\n<p>The rock is grey-white and sculpted by water \u2014 limestone is soluble, and the slightly acidic rain that falls over the Mendips has been dissolving and reshaping it for millions of years.<\/p>\n<p>Inside the limestone, water creates caves.<\/p>\n<p>The cave system that includes Gough&#8217;s Cave has been forming for somewhere between two and four million years, shaped by underground rivers that once flowed through the rock and have since largely dried up or diverted.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_12\"><\/div>\n<p>The chambers that remain are formations of extraordinary beauty: stalactites hanging from the ceiling, stalagmites rising from the floor, curtains of flowstone draped across the walls.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>The limestone that was once deposited by tropical seas has been sculpted by deep time into something that looks like the work of an extraordinary artist.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_13\"><\/div>\n<p>The cave has been open to the public for more than a century \u2014 a tourist attraction that brings visitors through the dimly lit passages to see the formations.<\/p>\n<p>But beneath the tourist infrastructure, the deeper archaeology of the site tells a story that goes back far further than any recorded human occupation of Britain.<\/p>\n<p>The cave attracted human visitors and inhabitants intermittently across thousands of years before recorded history.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" across the bones \u2014 and cracking to extract marrow.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the bones had been worked into tools.<\/p>\n<p>What this represents \u2014 ritual cannibalism, funerary defleshing, something else entirely \u2014 is a question that researchers have debated without fully resolving.<\/p>\n<p>After this early occupation, there is a gap in the human record at Gough&#8217;s Cave \u2014 a period when the cave was not occupied, or when any occupation left no recoverable trace.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_16\"><\/div>\n<p>And then, roughly 10,000 years ago, the person now known as Cheddar Man appears in the record.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>A Different Kind Of Occupation<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_17\"><\/div>\n<p>The Mesolithic period \u2014 the Middle Stone Age, dated roughly from about 10,000 BCE to about 4,000 BCE in Britain \u2014 was a time of profound environmental transition.<\/p>\n<p>The great ice sheets that had covered northern Europe during the Last Glacial Maximum were retreating rapidly.<\/p>\n<p>Sea levels were rising as the meltwater returned to the oceans.<\/p>\n<p>The landmass of Britain was changing shape.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_18\"><\/div>\n<p>At the start of the Mesolithic, Britain was not yet an island.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>It was connected to continental Europe by a wide plain of land that has since been given the name Doggerland \u2014 a name derived from the Dogger Bank in the North Sea, which was once part of this landscape.<\/p>\n<div fishing nets, found during oil exploration, surveyed by underwater archaeologists \u2014 indicates that Doggerland was a rich and productive landscape.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_21\"><\/div>\n<p>Communities of hunter-gatherers lived on it for thousands of years.<\/p>\n<p>As the ice sheets melted, sea levels rose.<\/p>\n<p>Doggerland shrank.<\/p>\n<p>The rising waters of the North Atlantic and the rising waters of the North Sea slowly encircled what would become Britain, isolating it from the European mainland in a process that was complete by roughly 6,000 to 8,000 years ago.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_22\"><\/div>\n<p>The communities that lived in Doggerland moved as the water rose \u2014 some onto higher ground that became the British Isles, some onto what became the mainland of northern Europe.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>The Mesolithic people who moved into Britain as the ice retreated were not the same as the people who had lived there before \u2014 or rather, the populations that had survived in the European south during the glacial maximum were moving north as the ice permitted.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_23\"><\/div>\n<p>They were hunter-gatherers with a highly sophisticated toolkit: small blades called microliths that could be hafted into arrows and spears, equipment for fishing and fowling, the full range of knowledge required to exploit the productive environments of the postglacial north.<\/p>\n<p>Among these people, or among those who came slightly later in the Mesolithic occupation of Britain, was the individual who would eventually be found in Gough&#8217;s Cave and named Cheddar Man.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_24\"><\/div>\n<p>The Discovery Of 1903<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>The formal excavation that led to the discovery of Cheddar Man&#8217;s remains was conducted in 1903 by a team working under Richard Cox Gough, the owner of the cave who had been developing it as a tourist attraction for the previous decade.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_25\"><\/div>\n<p>The human skeleton was found during this excavation work, buried \u2014 or naturally covered \u2014 in available in the early twentieth century produced estimates that placed the burial in the distant past, though the precision of those early methods was limited.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>The skeleton was transported to the Natural History Museum in London, where it has been housed and studied for more than a century.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" years before the present.<\/p>\n<p>This placed Cheddar Man at the very beginning of Britain&#8217;s Mesolithic period, among the first people to establish what the DigVentures team called &#8220;continuous habitation&#8221; of the island after the most recent glacial period.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_30\"><\/div>\n<p>He was not the first modern human to reach Britain \u2014 there is evidence of earlier Paleolithic presence \u2014 but he represented the population from which continuous British occupation derives.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>That distinction matters.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_31\"><\/div>\n<p>Previous populations had reached Britain, but they did not survive long enough to establish a permanent presence.<\/p>\n<p>Cheddar Man&#8217;s population was the one that stayed.<\/p>\n<p>What The Bones Said Before The DNA<\/p>\n<p>For decades, the story of Cheddar Man was told primarily through osteology \u2014 the study of bones.<\/p>\n<p>Before ancient DNA analysis became possible, everything that researchers knew or inferred about him came from the physical skeleton and its archaeological context.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_32\"><\/div>\n<p>Some of what the bones revealed was straightforward.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>He was male, based on the morphological characteristics of the skeleton.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_33\"><\/div>\n<p>He was young \u2014 probably in his early to mid twenties when he died, based on the development of his teeth and the fusion of his growth plates.<\/p>\n<p>He was of roughly average height for the period, around 166 centimeters (about five feet five inches).<\/p>\n<p>His teeth were in good condition, with little evidence of tooth decay or significant wear \u2014 consistent with a diet that was high in protein and low in refined carbohydrates.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_34\"><\/div>\n<p>His skull showed certain features that researchers used to characterize his morphology: a relatively long skull, prominent brow ridges, a face that was consistent with what was being found at other Mesolithic sites across Europe.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>He had what some researchers described as a unique facial structure \u2014 somewhat different from both the earlier Paleolithic populations and the later Neolithic populations that would replace the Mesolithic hunter-gatherers across Europe.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_35\"><\/div>\n<p>There was also evidence of something more ambiguous: damage to his skull.<\/p>\n<p>Specifically, there were holes in the skull that could be interpreted as evidence of violence \u2014 a blow to the head, perhaps, or some other form of physical trauma.<\/p>\n<p>Or they could have been caused by the natural processes of decomposition and burial, or by the damage inflicted by excavation in 1903.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_36\"><\/div>\n<p>The question of how Cheddar Man died has never been definitively answered.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>He appears to have been buried alone.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_37\"><\/div>\n<p>Most Mesolithic burials in Britain and Europe from this period were communal or involved multiple individuals, often buried together or in close proximity.<\/p>\n<p>A single, isolated burial was somewhat unusual.<\/p>\n<p>Whether this reflected something particular about this individual \u2014 his status, the circumstances of his death, the specific practices of his community \u2014 or whether it was simply the result of chance and preservation is not established.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_38\"><\/div>\n<p>And until 2018, one of the most fundamental questions about him \u2014 what did he look like? \u2014 could not be answered precisely.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>Reconstructions had been made over the decades, based on osteological analysis and general assumptions about what people of the period looked like.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_39\"><\/div>\n<p>These reconstructions had given him light or medium skin pigmentation.<\/p>\n<p>The DNA analysis would change that.<\/p>\n<p>The Ancient DNA Revolution<\/p>\n<p>To understand what the 2018 Cheddar Man study accomplished, it is necessary to understand what ancient DNA science is and what it has done to our knowledge of the human past.<\/p>\n<p>The study of ancient DNA \u2014 genetic material recovered from archaeological specimens \u2014 has been one of the most transformative scientific developments in archaeology and human paleontology in the past quarter century.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_40\"><\/div>\n<p>It has fundamentally revised our understanding of who populated the world in the deep past, where people came from, how populations moved and mixed, and what the people of the distant past actually looked like.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>The first successful recovery of ancient DNA from human remains was announced in 1985, when researchers extracted a small amount of genetic material from an ancient Egyptian mummy.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" the UCL\/NHM team that approached the project in 2017 had access to the most sophisticated ancient DNA analysis methods available.<\/p>\n<p>They drilled a two-millimeter hole into the skull to extract bone powder from the inner ear region.<\/p>\n<p>The amount of material they needed was tiny \u2014 just a few milligrams of bone.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\" data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_46\"><\/div>\n<p>The DNA within that powder was the result of ten thousand years of preservation, and it was, by the standards of ancient DNA data-adpath=\"\/22756311368\/LaptopsVilla\/Blog_InContent_47\"><\/div>\n<p>Before turning to what the analysis found, it is worth explaining what a genome is and what it can tell scientists about appearance and ancestry.<\/p>\n<p>The human genome is the complete set of genetic instructions encoded in the DNA of a cell.<\/p>\n<p>In the nucleus of most human cells, this information is organized into 23 pairs of chromosomes \u2014 long molecules of DNA, packaged by proteins, that carry the instructions for building and operating a human body.<\/p>\n<div data-onpage=\"true\"
