weeks pregnant with a daughter we had already named.

Her name was going to be June.

We had chosen it in the car, on the 8, arguing about it for forty minutes and then both going actually matters.

What happened was a placental abruption.

It happened at 11:40 at night, at home, with no warning of any kind, and by the time we reached the hospital I had lost a quantity of blood that I did not learn the number of for nine years.

June did not survive.

The surgeon came to find Logan at some point during that night and explained that the bleeding could not be controlled and that a hysterectomy was the only remaining option and that there was not time for a long conversation about it.

I woke up the following afternoon and Logan was holding my hand and he had been crying for so long that his face did not look like his face.

He told me our daughter had died and that I had nearly died and that they had had to take my uterus, and then he said, over and over, that the only thing that mattered was that I was here.

He meant it.

I have never once doubted that he meant it that day.

That is part of what makes the rest of this so hard to explain to people.

Gertrude came to the house eleven days later.

There were six people in my it.

That was the whole intervention.

One word, in a warning tone, and then the neighbor said something about the casserole and the conversation moved, and eleven minutes later Gertrude was talking about a cruise.

Afterward, in the kitchen, Logan put his hands on my shoulders and said the sentence that shaped the next nine years of my life.

<div strategy, and I ran it for nine years.

Because Gertrude did not say it once.

She said it, in one form or another, perhaps twenty times over nine years, always obliquely, always in company, always in a way that could not be objected to without my becoming the person who had made a scene.

<div data-onpage="true" taking it very hard.

Some women just push themselves too hard and then it’s too late.”

And every single time, I looked at my husband, and every single time my husband looked at his plate.

You have to understand what that does over nine years.

It is been putting in at the end of that quarter, the boxes I had carried up the stairs at seven months, the fact that I had not gone to the appointment on the Thursday because of a client after a Thanksgiving.

Gertrude had done the thing she did, which was to look at Paige’s daughter on her lap and say, to the table, “There’s nothing like it.

<div
