before.

Twice.

At least twice, and I have since worked out that it was probably more like nine or ten times, because he had been singing on that corner on Saturday evenings for most of a year.

The corner is on Congress, outside a bank, about forty feet from a restaurant I ate at perhaps twenty times a year.

There is a busker’s spot there that has been a busker’s spot for decades.

On a warm Saturday there is a man with a saw, and a woman who plays a harp, and a very bad trumpet player who I have a certain amount of affection for, and the whole thing is part of the noise of that street.

I walked past a boy singing there in the April.

I know I did, because I have the credit card receipt from the restaurant and I know where I parked.

And in the August, coming out of the same place, I remember standing on the curb waiting for a truck to go by and noticing, in the completely uninterested way you notice these things, that a kid was singing something with a little speaker on the sidewalk and that his mother was sitting on a planter with a paperback.

I did not look at either of them.

That is the actual beginning of this and everything else is downstream of it.

Not a coincidence.

Not fate arranging a meeting outside a restaurant.

A man walking past his own son on a sidewalk, twice that I can prove and probably more, over the course of a year, at a distance of about thirty feet, with his phone in his hand.

The night it finally landed was the ninth of November and I was at dinner with my mother.

We had opened a fourth yard that week, out past Manor.

I run a hauling company — aggregate, cement, rebar, the unglamorous middle of every construction project in central Texas — and by that year I had forty-one trucks and a hundred and nine employees and I was forty-two years old, and my mother liked to be taken somewhere with cloth napkins when something good happened.

The window we were sitting at was open because it was seventy-four degrees in November, which is Austin.

And at about eight-forty, over the traffic, I heard four lines.

Don’t count it tonight, don’t count it tonight,
the numbers’ll still be there in the morning.
Put your feet on the dash, put your head on my arm —
we’re the richest two people on this road.

I want to describe what happens in a body when that occurs, because I have never been able to do it properly.

It is not recognition.

Recognition is a thought.

This was underneath thinking.

My hands went cold and I was standing up before I had understood why I was standing up, and I heard my mother say my name, and I went out through the restaurant and out the door onto the sidewalk in about nine seconds.

Because I wrote those four lines.

I wrote them in a one-bedroom apartment on the east side of San Antonio in 2010, on the back of a fuel log, at about one in the morning, to make my wife stop crying about a spreadsheet.

Nobody else on earth knew them.

There is no recording.

I have never played them for a soul except her.

It is not a song, it is four lines and a tune, and it existed in exactly two heads in the world and one of them was mine.

A boy of about seven was singing it on a corner outside a bank with a nine-dollar Bluetooth speaker on the concrete beside him.

He was good, actually.

That is a strange thing to have noticed in that moment and I did notice it.

He had the phrasing right, the little hitch before put your feet on the dash, which is a thing I do and which is not in any way obvious.

He finished, and a couple put money in a hat, and he turned around and said something to a woman on the planter, and she looked up from her book.

And it was Carmen.

Eight years.

She had cut her hair to the shoulder and she had reading glasses on, which she did not have when I knew her, and she was wearing a denim jacket I recognized, which is a detail I have never been able to get past — a denim jacket I had bought her at an outlet mall outside Seguin in 2013, still in service eight years later, on a woman I had spent eight years assuming had a different life.

She saw me.

She did not look shocked.

That is the part I was least prepared for.

She looked at me the way you look at a bill you knew was coming.

“Wes.”

“Carmen.”

And then my mother came out of the restaurant behind me.

I have thought about the next four seconds more than almost anything in my life.

Loretta Tolliver was seventy-one years old and she had been, for the entire forty-two years I had known her, the most composed person in any room she had ever been in.

She had buried a husband at fifty-four and organized the reception herself.

She came out onto that sidewalk and she saw Carmen, and nothing happened in her face at all.

Then she saw the boy.

And my mother’s whole body went, in the way a person goes when they have been hit somewhere internal, and she put a hand out and took hold of the restaurant’s door frame, and her purse went on the concrete.

“Mom?”

“I’m all right.

I stood up too fast.”

She had not stood up too fast.

She had walked eleven feet from a table.

I knew, in that second, standing on Congress Avenue with a child’s voice still in my ears, that my mother knew exactly who that boy was, and had known before I did, and had known for a length of time that I did not yet have a number for.

And I did not say anything about it.

Not then.

That is worth recording too — my first instinct on that sidewalk, with everything already visible, was to get my mother a chair.

Part Two: What the Song Was

To make sense of any of this I have to go back to the apartment.

Carmen Abreu and I got married in 2009 when I was thirty and she was twenty-eight.

She was a bookkeeper at a hardware supply in San Antonio.

I had a commercial license and eleven years of driving for other people and an idea.

We bought the first truck in May of 2010.

A 2003 Peterbilt with four hundred and ninety thousand miles on it and a cracked windshield that I replaced myself in a parking lot.

The down payment was nine thousand four hundred dollars and I could not get it.

Carmen sold four gold bracelets that had been her grandmother’s and that she had worn at our wedding.

She did it on a Thursday and did not tell me until it was done, because she knew I would say no, and she was right, I would have.

Nine thousand four hundred dollars.

I have that number in my head the way other men have their kids’ birthdays, which is a sentence I would like to be able to take back.

The first year we made four thousand dollars.

Not a month.

In total, for the year, after the note and the fuel and the insurance.

What we had instead of money was a system, and the system was Carmen.

She did the books for the hardware supply from eight to four-thirty and then she did ours from six until whenever it got done, at a card table with a legal pad, because we did not have software and would not for three more years.

Fuel by the gallon.

Tolls.

Which customers paid in thirty days and which ones paid in ninety and which two would only pay if she called them on a Tuesday.

She built that company.

I want that on the page early and plainly, because there is a version of my life that I told for about eight years in which I built it, and that version is available to anybody who looks at a logo with my name on it.

I drove.

She made it a business.

The song is from the first winter.

There was a night in January of 2011 when a customer went under owing us eleven thousand dollars, which was more money than we had ever had at once, and Carmen sat at that card table at one in the morning going through the same column for the fourth time as though the number was going to be different.

She was not crying loudly.

She was crying the way she does, which is that she keeps working and her face gets wet and she is furious about it.

And I did not know what to do, so I got the guitar that I could play about six chords on, and I made up four lines on the spot to be annoying, and I sang them at her until she told me to shut up, and then she laughed, which was the entire objective.

Don’t count it tonight, don’t count it tonight,
the numbers’ll still be there in the morning.

And it became a thing.

That is how these things work.

For the next four years, any time one of us was up past midnight with a column of figures, the other one would say don’t count it tonight from the other room.

It was the only song I ever wrote.

I am not a musician.

It is four lines and two chords and it exists because a woman was crying at a card table.

I asked her, weeks later, why he knew it.

I had built up a whole thing in my head about it, and the thing in my head had her teaching it to him — deliberately, as a link to a father he did not have, which would have been a generous act and would have meant something about her feelings that I very much wanted it to mean.

And Carmen said: “I didn’t teach it to him.”

“Then how—”

“Wes, I sang it to him every night for four years.

That’s not teaching.

He absorbed it the way he absorbed my accent.”

“Why that one?”

And she said, “Because it was the only one I knew all the way through.”

Then she said the rest of it, in the flat voice she uses for the worst things, which I had forgotten and which came back to me all at once.

“I tried to stop, for about a year, when he was three.

Because I’d worked out where it came from and I didn’t want it in my house.

“And he’d ask for it.

He’d say the counting one. And I’d be standing in a dark room with a three-year-old asking for the only song his father ever wrote, and I’d have to decide, every night, whether to take it off him because of you.”

She shrugged.

“So I sang it.

Eleven hundred nights, probably.

And he never once asked me who wrote it, because why would he, and I never told him, because what was I going to say.”

Part Three: Eleven Minutes

I found out where she lived four days later and it is the single most humiliating fact in this entire account.

Carmen and Beto lived in a two-bedroom on the north side of a complex off Airport Boulevard.

My northeast yard — the one I had opened in 2017, the one I drove to two or three times a week for four years — is eleven minutes from her front door.

I have driven past the entrance to that complex, by my own estimate, somewhere between five and eight hundred times.

Beto’s school is nine minutes from that yard.

Their grocery store is the H-E-B I use.

The urgent care they went to when he broke his wrist at five is in the same strip as the tire place that does my pickup.

For four years my ex-wife and my son lived inside a circle I drove through twice a week.

People hear that and say Austin’s a big city, and it is, and that is not the point.

The point is that I had constructed, over eight years, an entire picture of where Carmen was, and the picture had her somewhere else.

Somewhere far.

Somewhere with a different life and a different man and a different kitchen.

I had never once checked.

Not in eight years.

Not a search, not a question to a mutual friend, not anything, and I had told myself that this was respect.

It was not respect.

Respect would have been knowing and staying away.

What I had was ignorance that I had decorated to look like dignity, and the difference between those two things is about four minutes of effort.

There is a second humiliation inside the first and I want it here as well.

When I stood on that sidewalk on the ninth of November and saw a woman on a planter with a paperback and a kid with a nine-dollar speaker and a hat with maybe fourteen dollars in it, I made an assessment in about two seconds, and the assessment was: they’re in trouble.

I want to set out what was actually true.

Carmen was making about fifty-two thousand dollars a year doing the books for two small companies and taking in alterations in the evenings.

She had health insurance.

She had eleven thousand dollars in savings and a car that ran.

Her rent was thirteen hundred dollars and it was not comfortable and she made it every month for eight years without once being late, and I know that because she showed me, later, in a way I deserved.

Beto was not busking for money.

He was singing on a corner because there is a spot there where people sing, and because he is a kid who likes singing, and because a woman he had begged for four consecutive Saturdays had eventually said fine, an hour, and had sat on a planter with a book eleven feet away to watch him do it.

The hat was his idea.

She let him keep it.

It was mostly quarters and he was saving for something involving a bicycle.

I looked at a woman letting her kid have a good time on a Saturday and I saw a rescue.

And every single thing I did wrong in the following four months came out of that two-second assessment, because a man who thinks he has found a rescue behaves in a specific way, and it is not a good way, and it took a very direct woman and about eleven arguments to get it out of me.

What I did that night, though — before any of that — was drive my mother home.

She did not say one word between Congress and her house in Westlake, which is a twenty-two minute drive.

I pulled into her driveway and put it in park and neither of us moved.

And I said: “Mom.

How old is he?”

And my mother said, “I don’t know what you’re asking me.”

“Yes you do.”

She had her hands in her lap and she was looking at the garage door.

“It’s late, Wesley.”

“Carmen said something to me on that sidewalk before she left.” I was not shouting.

I have gone over that night many times and I did not raise my voice once, and that is not a virtue, it is that I could not get enough air.

“She said, ask your mother what she got in the understand, the most complete confession she was capable of making that night.

Part Four: The Cheapest Test in the Building

<div data-onpage="true" and then nothing happened for another eight months, which is.

In the January of 2013 Carmen went to a clinic on the north side of San Antonio and saw a doctor named Alma Villareal, and over about four months she had every test there is.

I am going to list them, because I did not know what they were at the time and did not ask, and because I think a lot of men do not.

She had bloodwork four separate times, at specific days of her cycle, which meant taking mornings off data-adpath="/22756311368/LaptopsVilla/Blog_InContent_118">

The obvious thing is that my mother had taken it, and that was enormous and it is what everybody who hears this story goes to.

What I understood at that table was that the letter was, in its entirety, a letter to a man who might say no.

Carmen had sat down in February 2014 and written four full paragraphs establishing that it was all right if I did not want my son.

She had planned for it.

She had prepared a version of her own life in which the father of her child came to her door and said I’d expect.

Not because I had ever said anything like that.

Because for two years she had watched me take the easy road at every single table in my mother’s house, and she had extrapolated, correctly, the kind of man who does that.

My mother stole that data-adpath="/22756311368/LaptopsVilla/Blog_InContent_121">

But the letter my mother stole was already, before it ever reached that porch, a letter from a woman who had stopped them.”

“Yes.”

“Both.”

<div data-onpage="true" about the third one.

In the June of 2014, when Beto was about two weeks old, she had called the office.

Not my mobile.

The office — the landline on the business card, the number on the side of the trucks, which was the one number in the world she knew would still work.

A woman answered.

Carmen did not give a reason.

She said her name was Carmen Abreu and she needed Wes Tolliver to call her back and it was important, and she left her something like, “That’s a message on a scrap of paper in a trucking office eight years ago, Carmen, there’s no telling where that went,” and I want to record that I said it in immediately, without a pause: “Yeah.

Of course I do.”

I had to sit down.

She said: “I remember because I didn’t know what to do with it.

I want to say that carefully rather than defensively: I do not believe that on the nineteenth of June 2014 I had any idea there was a child, because if I had known, my mother’s box would not have mattered — nothing would have been hidden from me, I would simply have been a man who abandoned a son, and I do not believe I am that.

What I think happened is this.

I was seven months out of a marriage.

I was thirty-five and I was working a hundred hours a week specifically so that there would never be an hour in which I had to sit still.

And a woman handed me a piece of paper with my ex-wife’s name on it at a fuel island, and something in my chest went, and I made a decision in about a second and a half that I did not experience as a decision at all.

I data-adpath="/22756311368/LaptopsVilla/Blog_InContent_146">

It took about an hour and a half and she cried twice and I want to set it out properly, because it is the most honest thing she has ever said to me and because the reasons are worse than the ones people expect.

The first reason is the one everybody guesses and it is real.

She had spent eighteen months telling people that Carmen could not have children.

Her sister.

Two women at fact, with a doctor attached to it that did not exist.

And in the February of 2014, a woman she had said that about stood on her porch, five months pregnant, holding a sonogram.

My mother said: “If I let her in and you found out, then within a week every person I had said it to was going to know that I had made it up.”

<div data-onpage="true" doesn’t feel like that at the time.

At the time it’s just a door, and a woman on the other side of it, and about four seconds.”

<div data-onpage="true" would take Carmen back.

Not for a bad reason, or not only.

She said: “You were thirty-five and you were miserable and you were working yourself into the ground.

And I thought, if he finds out about this baby, he’ll go straight back to her in a week, out of data-adpath="/22756311368/LaptopsVilla/Blog_InContent_152">

I said, “That was not your decision to make.”

“No.”

“Mom.

That was not a hard question.”

“No. It wasn’t.”

And then she gave me the third reason, which she had not prepared and which came out badly and which I believe is the true one.

She said: “And by the summer, when the photograph came — by then I’d already done it of whether to tell you what I’d done in February.

And every month that went by, that got bigger, and the baby stayed the same size.”

She looked at her hands.

“By the time he was one I wasn’t hiding a grandchild from home.

There was a professional involved, a family therapist named Adele Fontanez, who saw Carmen twice on her own first, and then Carmen and Beto together, before anything was said to him at all.

And the timing was hers.

I asked, once, in the December, whether we were data-adpath="/22756311368/LaptopsVilla/Blog_InContent_178">

Dr.

Fontanez’s advice, which Carmen relayed to me afterward and which I have since repeated to two other people, was that you do not do it as a revelation.

You do not sit a child down and say I have something to tell you. You put it into the ordinary flow of the day and you let the child set the speed, because a seven-year-old cannot process a scene but can process a fact.

So Carmen said, at the kitchen table, more or less: you know how I’ve told you your data-onpage="true" data-adpath="/22756311368/LaptopsVilla/Blog_InContent_180">

And Beto said: “The truck guy?”

I had, at that point, taken him to see a truck.

That was the entire relationship.

He had sat in a Peterbilt in the northeast yard for eleven minutes and pulled the horn cord twice and it was, in his ranking of the events of his life, somewhere near the top.

Carmen said, “Yeah.

The truck guy.”

And my son said, “Okay,” and thought about it for a bit, and then asked whether that meant he could go in a truck again.

That was the first hour.

Dr.

Fontanez had told Carmen to expect exactly that, and had told her that the actual questions come somewhere between four hours and four weeks later, and that the job is to be available and not to prompt.

It was about five hours.

At around three in the afternoon he came out of his room and eighty percent of the truth and it would have been the easiest sentence in the world and it would have been believed and nobody on earth would have blamed her for it.

What she said was: “Mostly no.

Somebody in his family kept it from him, which was a very bad thing that a grown-up did.

And there was one time, when you were a baby, when he could have found out somebody had taught him to, and for about twenty minutes it was one of the worst experiences of my life, two people being polite on a wood chip surface.

<div data-onpage="true" my birthdays?”

I had prepared about eleven answers for that and I used none of them.

What I said was: “Because grown-ups made a mess.

Some of it was somebody else and some of it was me, and the part that was me is a thing I’m going to tell you about properly when you’re bigger, because you’re going to want to know exactly and right now I’d only be able to tell you a soft version.

“But none of it was you, and none of it was your mom.

I want to be extremely clear about that part today and we can do the should call me something, you come and tell me and I’ll deal with it.”

He said, “Okay,” in exactly his mother’s voice, and then he asked whether I had ever driven a truck into anything, and I said yes, a fence, in 2004, and that was the end of the formal part.

He called me Wes for fourteen months.

<div data-onpage="true" in her name in the last week of January and I did not tell her I was going to.

I want to describe the thinking honestly, because at the time it felt like generosity and it was nothing of the kind.

What I actually felt was unbearable.

I had a number in my head — seven retroactively.

Money was the only lever in the room that moved.

So I pulled it, and the relief lasted about nine hours, and that is what generosity is not.

It came back on the third of February with a note that said: Don’t do this again.

We had the fight two days later, in her kitchen, with Beto at his cousin’s, and it lasted about forty minutes and it is the most useful conversation I have ever had with another human being.

I said: “You’ve been doing this alone for seven years on fifty-two thousand dollars a year.

I have more money than I know what to do with.

Explain to me how taking it is worse than not taking it.”

And Carmen said: “Because you’re not paying for his childhood.

There’s nothing to pay.

You’re paying so you can stop feeling what you’re feeling, and I’m not selling you that.

“And because the second I take eighty thousand dollars out of your feelings, that’s the arrangement forever.

Every time you feel bad you’ll send money and every time I need something I’ll have to work out whether asking makes me the person who takes money.

I’ve watched that happen to my sister.

I’m not doing it.”

I said, “Then what am I supposed to do?”

And she said: “Turn up.

That’s it.

That’s the whole thing and it’s cheaper than eighty thousand dollars and it’s much harder, which is why you went for the money first.”

Then I raised the other thing, which I had been building up to for a week and which was not about Beto at all.

I said: “There’s something separate and I want to put it data-adpath="/22756311368/LaptopsVilla/Blog_InContent_203">

That’s a debt, and it’s eight years old, and I’ve had it valued.”

And Carmen said no, and we went round it about six times, and she was immovable, and her reason was not pride.

Her reason was: “If I take a piece of that company, then for the rest of my life every about Denny Sorrels in the second week, and I behaved badly about it for about a month, and I want it in here because leaving it out would make me look considerably better than I was.

Carmen had been seeing him for two and a half years.

He is fifty-one.

He does commercial HVAC — service work, mostly restaurants — and he has two grown daughters and an ex-wife in which is exactly as many as I know, and which is why my son could play the thing I wrote in the first place.

He drove Beto to an urgent care at eleven at night in 2020 with a suspected broken data-adpath="/22756311368/LaptopsVilla/Blog_InContent_236">

He put in a window unit in Beto’s room in a July when the apartment’s system could not keep up, at his own cost, and took it out again in October and stored it in his own garage for the winter, and did that three years running.

And when I appeared — a man with forty trucks and a legitimate claim and, from his point of view, no warning whatsoever — Denny Sorrels did not say one word against me to Beto, ever, and I know that because Beto is seven and would have repeated it.

He and I had a conversation in the April, in a parking lot, which he initiated.

He said: “I’m going to say one thing and then I’ll leave it alone.

<div data-onpage="true" the boy would be better off.

And I want to be honest about the first thing that happened in me, which is that some small part of me heard a version of it that was not the November, a year after the sidewalk, in her shop, in the afternoon, with Beto at school.

She had a storefront by then — eleven hundred square feet on Cameron said: “I need to ask you something once, and then I’m never going to ask it again, and I want you to know that before you answer so you don’t have to manage me
