Part One: The Car Door<\/strong><\/p>\n

The wedding was at a courtyard property on Cordova Street in Saint Augustine, the kind with a coquina wall and a live oak in the middle of it and a fee schedule that starts at nine thousand dollars, and I was in the third row on the bride’s side because Dolores Vanterpool does not drive on the interstate anymore and I had said yes in a group chat in February without thinking about it.<\/p>\n

That is the entire reason I was there.<\/p>\n

I want that on the record early, because people have since constructed a version of this in which I went looking for something, and I did not go looking for anything.<\/p>\n

I went because a woman I had sat beside in eleventh-grade chemistry asked me for a ride and because I had a Saturday free.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

I had muted the class group chat in 2019.<\/p>\n

I had seen the engagement announcement the way you see things in a muted chat \u2014 as a rectangle you scroll past at a traffic light.<\/p>\n

Giselle Marchetti, who I had known for four years and not spoken to for seventeen, was getting married.<\/p>\n

I had tapped the heart.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

I had not opened the photographs.<\/p>\n

That is the first of the things I have had to sit with.<\/p>\n

The ceremony was called for four o’clock.<\/p>\n

At about ten past, somebody at the back made the sound that a crowd makes when a car turns in, and everybody did the thing everybody does, which is turn around while pretending not to.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

A grey sedan came through the gate.<\/p>\n

A driver got out and went round.<\/p>\n

And I would like to be able to tell you that I recognized my husband.<\/p>\n

I did not recognize my husband.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

I recognized a watch.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The door opened and a man’s arm came out and reached for the top of the frame, the way tall men do getting out of a low car, and on that wrist, for about a second and a half, there was a watch with a green dial and a steel bracelet and a bezel that catches the light in a way that I had spent two months of 2021 learning about before I bought one.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

I know that watch to a degree that is difficult to convey.<\/p>\n

I know the lug width.<\/p>\n

I know the third link from the clasp, which was removed at a shop on Clematis Street by a man named Yuri who told me the sizing was free and then charged me forty dollars.<\/p>\n

I know that the crown is slightly stiff because it went in the ocean at Peanut Island in the July of 2022 and was serviced afterward and never came back quite the same.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

I had given it to Christian for our first anniversary.<\/p>\n

It cost more than I had ever spent on anything that was not a car, and I had been so pleased with myself that I had made him open it at the table.<\/p>\n

So for about one second I sat in a white folding chair in a courtyard in Saint Augustine and thought:\u00a0that man has Christian’s watch.<\/em><\/p>\n

And then the rest of him came out of the car.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

I have been asked, by four separate people, what that felt like, and all four of them wanted a physical answer \u2014 the floor tilting, the sound going away, that kind of thing.<\/p>\n

I understand why.<\/p>\n

It is what the moment is supposed to do.<\/p>\n

What actually happened is that my hands got cold and my phone slid about an inch in my fingers and I caught it against my knee, and my first complete thought, in words, in the front of my head, was not a scream.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

It was:\u00a0the Savannah office.<\/em><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Because Christian was in Savannah.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

He had left on Thursday morning.<\/p>\n

He had texted me at nine forty that morning \u2014 I have it, it is an exhibit now, which is an absurd sentence to write about a text message \u2014 and it said,\u00a0long day ahead, call you tonight, love you.<\/em><\/p>\n

And there he was, in a courtyard eleven miles from where I went to high school, in a charcoal suit I had never seen, walking toward a live oak with his hand doing up a button.<\/p>\n

Part Two: The Next Forty Minutes<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

I did not stand up.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

This is the part that gets me the most disbelief and I have stopped trying to defend it, so I will just explain it.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

I am a contracting officer.<\/p>\n

I have been one for eleven years.<\/p>\n

What that means in practice is that my entire professional life consists of sitting in rooms where somebody has just said something that cannot possibly be true, and not reacting to it, because the reaction is worthless and the documentation is not.<\/p>\n

You do not say\u00a0that is a lie<\/em>\u00a0in a negotiation.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

You say nothing, and you write down the time, and you ask them to put it in writing, and then you have it.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

My body went and got that.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

It went and got it before anybody consulted me.<\/p>\n

So what I did, in the third row, on the bride’s side, with my hands shaking badly enough that Dolores asked me twice if I was all right, was take out my phone and photograph the ceremony.<\/p>\n

Everybody was photographing the ceremony.<\/p>\n

It is the one event in American life where a woman holding up a telephone is invisible.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

I took nineteen photographs and two videos.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

I got the officiant.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

I got the groom’s face at four separate points.<\/p>\n

I got the wrist.<\/p>\n

I got the moment where he turned around to watch her come up the aisle, which is the one I have never been able to look at since and which a lawyer described, in a room, as\u00a0demonstrative of state of mind<\/em>.<\/p>\n

And I got the vows.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Reverend Lyle Pettibone asked a man whose passport I had renewed in 2023 whether he took this woman, and that man said\u00a0I do<\/em>\u00a0in the voice he uses when he is pleased with himself, which is slightly lower than his ordinary voice, and which I had heard on a Tuesday two weeks earlier when he came back from the airport and found I had fixed the gate.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Dolores cried.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Most of the row cried.<\/p>\n

Giselle’s mother made a noise.<\/p>\n

I sat there for the remaining twenty-six minutes of my marriage and I did not do one single thing.<\/p>\n

Then there was the recessional and the sort of general collapse of order that follows, and I stood up and I told Dolores that I had a migraine coming and that I was going to get the car and would she mind riding back with her cousin.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

She minded.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

She was annoyed with me for five weeks.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

She is not annoyed with me anymore.<\/p>\n

I walked out through the gate and past the grey sedan and I got into my car on Cordova Street and I sat in it with the engine off for some period of time that I cannot account for and that I have put at somewhere between ten and thirty-five minutes.<\/p>\n

I know it was at least ten because a parking enforcement officer came past twice.<\/p>\n

The only thing I remember deciding, in that car, is that I was not going to go back in.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

I have thought about that decision more than almost anything else in this account.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

There was a version available to me that afternoon.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

I could have walked back through that gate while there were three hundred people on a lawn with drinks in their hands and said one sentence.<\/p>\n

I know exactly what the sentence would have been.<\/p>\n

I composed it in the car.<\/p>\n

It was eleven words long and it was extremely good.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

And I did not use it, and the reason is not dignity and it is not restraint and I want to be honest about it.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The reason is that I did not know, at that point, whether Giselle Marchetti knew.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

That was the only question in my head that had any weight to it, and I could not answer it from a car, and the cost of getting it wrong was a woman in a white dress on the worst day of her life in front of everybody she has ever met.<\/p>\n

So I drove to Jacksonville.<\/p>\n

Part Three: What I Did Instead<\/strong><\/p>\n

It is seventy minutes from Saint Augustine to my sister’s house in Jacksonville and I do not remember any of it.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

What I remember is arriving, and my sister opening the door, and me saying a sentence I had not planned, which was: “I need you to not ask me anything for about an hour.”<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Renata is four years older than me and she is a hospital pharmacist and she is, on a list of people you would want to arrive at unannounced, somewhere in the top two in the country.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

She said, “Okay.” She made tea I did not drink.<\/p>\n

She took her children to their father’s.<\/p>\n

She came back at nine.<\/p>\n

And in the four hours between those two things I sat at a kitchen table in a wedding-guest dress and I built a file.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

That is the only way I know how to describe it.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

I did not cry until the Tuesday.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

What I did on the Saturday night was open a laptop and start a folder and put things in it in a numbered order with a date on each one, because that is the only competence I have that is portable.<\/p>\n

Here is what went into the folder that night, in order, because the order is the thing.<\/p>\n

One.<\/strong>\u00a0The nineteen photographs and two videos, exported with their metadata intact, which took me an hour to work out how to do properly and which mattered later more than anything else in the file.<\/p>\n

Two.<\/strong>\u00a0Our marriage certificate.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Palm Beach County, issued the seventh of October 2021, recorded the twentieth.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

I had a scan in a cloud folder labelled\u00a0house documents<\/em>\u00a0because I had needed it for a mortgage refinance.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Three.<\/strong>\u00a0The text message from nine forty that morning.<\/p>\n

Four.<\/strong>\u00a0Screenshots of the engagement announcement in the class group chat, including the timestamp, which was the eleventh of January.<\/p>\n

And it was at number four that the night stopped being about a wedding.<\/p>\n

Because I opened the photographs.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

The announcement was a set of six engagement photographs, posted by Giselle on the eleventh of January, which I had scrolled past at a traffic light.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The first two are outdoors and could be anywhere.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

The third one is a kitchen.<\/p>\n

There is a woman sitting on a counter with her legs crossed at the ankle and a man standing in front of her with his hands on either side of her, and they are laughing at something off-camera, and behind them there is an island with a waterfall edge in a grey-veined quartz, and above it three pendant lights in a brushed brass finish, and to the left of the frame the corner of a window with a particular kind of muntin, and on the sill of that window a small terracotta pot with a dead succulent in it.<\/p>\n

I killed that succulent in the spring of 2022.<\/p>\n

I never threw it out because I kept meaning to try again.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

That is my kitchen.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Those photographs were taken in my house in Palm Beach, in a room I paid for, in front of a window I chose, and they were posted on the internet on the eleventh of January, and on the eleventh of January I was in Huntsville, Alabama, at a source selection.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Part Four: Three Years<\/strong><\/p>\n

I should say who he was, and I am going to do it plainly, because the useful version of this story is not the one where I was a fool.<\/p>\n

Christian Dupont was forty-one.<\/p>\n

He ran a company called Dupont Enterprise Group, which his father founded in 1988 and which does facilities services and logistics support \u2014 grounds maintenance, custodial, warehouse staffing, vehicle fleet servicing \u2014 for institutional clients, including, in a way that became the whole of my problem, several federal ones.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

We met in the March of 2021 at a fundraiser for a hospice in West Palm Beach that I went to because my mother made me.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

He was on the board.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

He was not working the room.<\/p>\n

He was outside on a terrace on the phone being patient with somebody about a broken chiller, and I went out for air and heard the end of it, and the thing he said to whoever was on the other end was, “It’s not your fault.<\/p>\n

Tell me what you need.”<\/p>\n

That is the whole of it.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

That is what I fell for, and I have had a lot of time to examine it and it has held up as an accurate account.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

He was easy.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

He was not a large personality.<\/p>\n

He asked questions and remembered the answers, which is rarer than it should be.<\/p>\n

He was good with my mother, who is difficult, and excellent with my sister’s children, and he could cook exactly four things and did all four of them well.<\/p>\n

We married on the ninth of October 2021, at the courthouse in West Palm Beach, with eleven people, because I did not want a wedding and he said he did not either.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

I have thought about that sentence rather a lot since.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The house in Palm Beach is mine.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

I bought it in 2019 with an inheritance from my grandmother and two years of saving and a mortgage I am still paying, and it is not grand \u2014 it is a three-bedroom on the wrong side of the island with a kitchen I redid in 2020 and a gate that sticks.<\/p>\n

He moved into it in 2021.<\/p>\n

His name is not on the deed.<\/p>\n

That was not suspicion; it was a refinance and a title company and the path of least resistance.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

And he travelled.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The company has an office in Savannah and one outside Jacksonville and the head office is in Palm Beach, and Christian was in Savannah from Tuesday or Wednesday through Friday for most of three years, and in the last fourteen months, more.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

People ask whether that bothered me.<\/p>\n

It did not, and I want to explain why, because the explanation is the thing that let it happen and I am not going to pretend otherwise.<\/p>\n

I travel.<\/p>\n

In 2023 I was away ninety-one nights.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

I do source selections, which means I disappear into a windowless room in another state for two or three weeks at a time and come out having barely used a telephone.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

My job is, structurally, an excuse machine, and I had been using it for eleven years, and a marriage where both people are gone half the week looked to me like a marriage, because it was the only kind I had ever had.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

We had, in three years, one sustained argument.<\/p>\n

It was about whether to have a child.<\/p>\n

He wanted to wait.<\/p>\n

I was thirty-six and did not want to wait much longer and we had agreed, in the January, to revisit it in the summer.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

That conversation is on a list that I keep and do not show people.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Part Five: The Other Five Photographs<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

I went back to the engagement announcement at about eleven o’clock on the Saturday night with a legal pad, which is what I do, and I did what I would have done to a contractor’s past-performance submission, which is read every image as if it were a document.<\/p>\n

There were six.<\/p>\n

One and two<\/strong>\u00a0are outdoors at what I eventually identified as a state park near Brunswick, Georgia.<\/p>\n

They are undatable from the image.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

They are the ones everybody looks at.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Three<\/strong>\u00a0is my kitchen.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Four<\/strong>\u00a0is the two of them on a sofa with a dog.<\/p>\n

The dog is a chocolate labrador named Otto who belongs to Giselle.<\/p>\n

The sofa is not mine and the room is not mine.<\/p>\n

Five<\/strong>\u00a0is a close-up of her hand on his shoulder with the ring in focus, and it is the least useful and most looked-at photograph in the set, and it is the one that I have had to explain to three separate lawyers is actually important, because you can see, behind her hand, out of focus and in the top right corner, about an inch and a half of a window frame with the same muntin.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Same house.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Same room, taken from the other direction.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

And six<\/strong>\u00a0is the two of them outside on a step at dusk with the light behind them, and behind the step there is a gate.<\/p>\n

The gate sticks.<\/p>\n

There is a piece of two-by-four propped against the left-hand post in that photograph, which is what I used for about five months in 2023 to keep it from swinging shut, before I had it fixed in the February.<\/p>\n

So photograph six was taken before February.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

And the succulent in photograph three died in the spring of 2022 and I moved that pot to the sill in about the June of that year.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Which gave me a window: those photographs were taken at my house somewhere between the middle of 2022 and the February.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

The engagement was announced in the January.<\/p>\n

Christian and I were married in the October of 2021.<\/p>\n

I sat at my sister’s kitchen table at half past one in the morning with a legal pad in front of me on which I had written, in my own handwriting, a chronology of my own marriage in the format I use for contract disputes, with a left-hand column of dates and a right-hand column of source documents.<\/p>\n

And Renata came down for water and read it over my shoulder and said, “Cam.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

What are you doing.”<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

And I said, “I’m working out how long.”<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

She said, “Does it matter how long?”<\/p>\n

And I said yes, and she said why, and I gave her the honest answer, which was the first honest thing I said out loud that night.<\/p>\n

I said: “Because if it started in 2022 then he married me while he was already doing it, and if it started last year then something changed, and those are two completely different men and I need to know which one I have been living with.”<\/p>\n

Part Six: What a Marriage Record Actually Is<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

On the Sunday morning I got up at five and drove to Palm Beach and I did not go into my own house.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

I parked three streets away and sat there for forty minutes, and then I drove back north, and I have never been able to explain that to anybody satisfactorily.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

I had a right to be in that house.<\/p>\n

It is my house.<\/p>\n

I did not want to be in a room where those photographs had been taken while I was in Huntsville, and I did not have the language for that on a Sunday morning, and I still do not, entirely.<\/p>\n

What I did instead was the single most useful thing in this account, and it cost nine dollars.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Here is a thing most people do not know, and it is the first of the four practical things I now tell people.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

A marriage is a county record.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Not a state one, not a federal one.<\/p>\n

In Florida, you apply to a county clerk, any county, for a licence.<\/p>\n

The clerk issues it.<\/p>\n

There is a three-day waiting period for Florida residents, which is waived if you complete a registered premarital preparation course.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

The licence is good for sixty days.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

After the ceremony, the officiant signs it and returns it to the issuing clerk within ten days, and the clerk records it.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

And the index of those records is public.<\/p>\n

There is no national marriage registry in the United States.<\/p>\n

None.<\/p>\n

There is no database that a county clerk queries to find out whether the man in front of her is already married.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

The application asks him, and he answers, and that is the entire control.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

I have said that sentence in four different rooms now and it has never once failed to make somebody sit up.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

So on that Sunday, from a laptop in a coffee shop on Beach Boulevard, I searched three county clerks’ official-records indexes \u2014 Palm Beach, Duval, St.<\/p>\n

Johns \u2014 for the name Dupont.<\/p>\n

Palm Beach returned our marriage.<\/p>\n

Recorded the twentieth of October 2021.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Still recorded.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Nothing after it.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

No dissolution, no annulment, no judgment of any kind.<\/p>\n

St.<\/p>\n

Johns returned nothing, because the ceremony had been the previous afternoon and the officiant had ten days.<\/p>\n

And so I ordered a certified copy of my own marriage certificate, which cost nine dollars and change, and I ordered it to be mailed to my sister’s address, and I sat in a coffee shop on a Sunday morning and I understood the shape of the thing for the first time.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

It was not that he was leaving me for her.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

If he had been leaving me for her, there would have been a divorce, and there was no divorce, and there had never been a petition filed in any county in the state of Florida.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

He had married her while married to me.<\/p>\n

Which meant one of two things was true.<\/p>\n

Either Giselle Marchetti knew and had participated in it, which would have made her a person I needed to be very careful about.<\/p>\n

Or she did not know, in which case a woman had stood in a courtyard the previous afternoon in front of three hundred people and made vows that were, as a matter of law, worth nothing at all, and did not know it, and was at that moment on a plane to somewhere.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Part Seven: Sixty-One Days<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The licence file, when I eventually saw it, answered the first question and it answered it completely.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

They applied to the St.<\/p>\n

Johns County clerk on a Tuesday in the March.<\/p>\n

Both parties present, which is required.<\/p>\n

Both signed.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

The application contains a line \u2014 it is not buried, it is not small print, it is a field on the front \u2014 asking each applicant whether they have been previously married, and if so, how that marriage ended, and on what date.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Christian Dupont wrote:\u00a0Divorced.<\/em><\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

And in the date field he wrote a date in the June of 2019.<\/p>\n

Two years and four months before he married me.<\/p>\n

That is a sworn application.<\/p>\n

It is signed under penalty of perjury.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Nobody checks it.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

There is no mechanism to check it, and a deputy clerk who has processed eleven of them before lunch is not going to invent one.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

They took the premarital preparation course, which is four hours and which waives the three-day wait and which knocks thirty-two dollars and fifty cents off the licence fee, at a church in Saint Augustine, in the April.<\/p>\n

Both of them.<\/p>\n

Four hours.<\/p>\n

Together, in a room, with a workbook.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

I have a copy of the certificate of completion.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

It is on a light blue form.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

It has both their names on it and the name of the course provider and a signature.<\/p>\n

Of every document in this matter \u2014 and there are, at last count, upward of nine hundred pages \u2014 that light blue certificate is the one I cannot look at.<\/p>\n

Not the licence.<\/p>\n

Not the photographs of my kitchen.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Not the video of the vows.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

A four-hour premarital course, in the April, in a church hall, with a workbook, sitting next to a woman he was going to marry in the September while he was married to me.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

He did the homework.<\/p>\n

The licence issued on the nineteenth of April.<\/p>\n

It was valid for sixty days.<\/p>\n

It expired, unused, on the eighteenth of June.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

And they applied again \u2014 a second licence, second fee, second application, same sworn question, same answer, the same date in the June of 2019 written a second time in the same handwriting \u2014 on the twenty-ninth of July.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

That second application is the document the state attorney’s office eventually cared about, and the reason is that it is not a decision.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

It is a decision made twice, ninety-nine days apart, in a public office, in front of a clerk.<\/p>\n

I asked, months later, why the first licence expired.<\/p>\n

The answer turned out to be entirely ordinary and it is worse for being ordinary.<\/p>\n

The venue on Cordova Street had a cancellation in September and Giselle wanted the courtyard.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Part Eight: Monday Morning<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

I did not call Christian on the Saturday and I did not call him on the Sunday.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

He called me on the Saturday night at twenty past nine and I let it go.<\/p>\n

He texted at ten.<\/p>\n

He called again Sunday morning and texted twice and then sent, at about four on Sunday afternoon:\u00a0everything ok? getting worried.<\/em><\/p>\n

I looked at that for a long time.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

He was on his honeymoon.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

He was in a hotel somewhere with a woman he had married on Saturday afternoon, and he had noticed that his wife had not answered her telephone for thirty hours, and he was worried about her.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

I want to be careful here, because this is where people want me to say that it was all performance and that he never cared about me, and that would be a tidier story.<\/p>\n

I do not think it was performance.<\/p>\n

I think Christian Dupont was, in some functional and entirely sincere sense, worried about me on that Sunday afternoon, and I think he would have got on a plane if I had said I needed him to, and I think he had partitioned his life so completely that both of those things were true at once and neither one interfered with the other.<\/p>\n

That is a worse thing than a con man.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

A con man is at least paying attention to you.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

I replied at half past five.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

I wrote:\u00a0Fine.<\/em><\/p>\n

Long weekend with Renata.<\/p>\n

Talk in the week.<\/p>\n

He sent a heart.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

And then on the Monday morning at ten past eight I sat in my car in the parking structure at my office in Jacksonville and I did the thing that everybody who hears this story gets wrong, and that I would do again in exactly the same order.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

I did not call a divorce lawyer.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

I did not call the police.<\/p>\n

I did not call Giselle.<\/p>\n

I called Deborah Quist, who is the deputy ethics official for my agency, and I said: “Deborah, it’s Camille Aubrey.<\/p>\n

I need to make a disclosure and I think I need to do it this morning and I think I need to do it in writing.”<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

And she said, “All right.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

What’s the subject?”<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

And I said, “My husband.<\/p>\n

And I think I may have a problem with a contractor.”<\/p>\n

Part Nine: Why I Called Her First<\/strong><\/p>\n

I have been asked about that call more than about anything else in this account, including by people who were angry about it, and the anger is always the same shape.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

It is:\u00a0your husband had just married somebody else and you called the compliance office.<\/em><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Yes.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Here is why, and it is not because I am cold, and it is not because I am unusually correct, and by the end of that year I was neither of those things.<\/p>\n

I am a contracting officer with an unlimited warrant.<\/p>\n

That word does a lot of work and most people do not know it, so: a contracting officer’s warrant is a document.<\/p>\n

It is called a Certificate of Appointment.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

It is signed by an appointing official, it has my name on it, and it states the authority I hold and any limit on it.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Mine had no dollar limit.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

What it means, in the only sentence that matters, is that my signature obligates the United States government to pay money.<\/p>\n

Not my recommendation.<\/p>\n

Not my approval.<\/p>\n

My signature, alone, on a document, creates a binding obligation on the Treasury.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

There are, at any given time, a few thousand people in the country who can do that.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

It takes a specified number of years and a specified amount of coursework and a board, and it can be taken away from you in an afternoon by one person, and it is the only professional thing I have ever cared about.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Now.<\/p>\n

Dupont Enterprise Group holds federal contracts.<\/p>\n

Not mine.<\/p>\n

Not ones I awarded or administered \u2014 and I want to say clearly, here and at the front, that I had known that from the beginning and had built a wall around it in 2021 before I married him.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

His company’s federal work is in a different commodity area and, for the most part, a different region, and I had never had a DEG file on my desk, and I had told my supervisor about the marriage in 2021, and I had listed it on my financial disclosure form every single year.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Contracting officers file an OGE Form 450.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

It is a confidential financial disclosure.<\/p>\n

It goes in every year, and on it you list your spouse’s employment and any business interests, and I had put Dupont Enterprise Group on the line marked\u00a0spouse’s employer<\/em>\u00a0four times, in four consecutive years, in my own handwriting and then electronically.<\/p>\n

So I was clean.<\/p>\n

I knew I was clean.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

I had the paper.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

And on that Monday morning at ten past eight I understood something that took the top off my head, and it is the thing I went into that parking structure knowing and came out of it having named.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Everything I had built that wall out of was\u00a0my<\/em>\u00a0conduct.<\/p>\n

I had controlled what I did.<\/p>\n

I had never once controlled what he said I was.<\/p>\n

Because I had just learned, over thirty-six hours, that my husband was a man who would sign a sworn application to a county clerk stating that he had been divorced since 2019, twice, in order to get something he wanted.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

And if he would do that to a clerk in St.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Johns County for a wedding, then the question of what Dupont Enterprise Group had been telling the federal government about its chairman’s wife for three years was not a question I could answer, and it was not a question I could afford to be asked by somebody else first.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

There is a principle in this work and it is very simple and I have taught it to junior staff for a decade.<\/p>\n

The disclosure you make is a fact.<\/p>\n

The disclosure that is made about you is an allegation.<\/p>\n

They are the same information.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

The difference is about eighteen months of your life.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Deborah Quist listened for six minutes without saying anything and then she said, “Camille, stop.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Don’t tell me any more on a phone.<\/p>\n

Come upstairs.<\/p>\n

And before you do \u2014 do not log into anything, do not search any system, do not pull any file on that company.<\/p>\n

Not one.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Do you understand why?”<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

And I said yes.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Because the audit log of a federal contracting system records who looked at what and when, and a woman who spends Monday morning querying every record relating to her husband’s company is a woman who will spend the following year explaining it.<\/p>\n

I have thought since that this is the single most useful thing anybody said to me in the whole of that year, and that she said it inside six minutes, and that it is not in any training I have ever taken.<\/p>\n

Part Ten: The Capability Statement<\/strong><\/p>\n

The thing that I had been afraid of on the Monday morning turned out to exist, and it turned out to be worse than I had imagined in one respect and much better in another, and the gap between those two took eleven months to resolve.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Every company that sells to the federal government has a document called a capability statement.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

It is one or two pages.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

It is marketing.<\/p>\n

It goes to programme offices and to prime contractors who might subcontract, and it says who you are and what you do and why anybody should believe you can do it.<\/p>\n

Dupont Enterprise Group’s capability statement went through six revisions between 2021 and the year of the wedding, and I have read all six.<\/p>\n

The 2021 version is unremarkable.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

It lists contract vehicles, past performance, the NAICS codes, a paragraph about the founder.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The version issued in the March of 2022 \u2014 five months after I married him \u2014 added a section headed\u00a0Leadership and Federal Market Access<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

And in that section, in a bulleted list, was this:<\/p>\n

DEG’s executive leadership maintains long-standing direct relationships within the federal acquisition community, including at the contracting officer level, affording the firm uncommon visibility into agency requirements and procurement planning.<\/em><\/p>\n

That sentence does not name me.<\/p>\n

It does not name anybody.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

It does not name an agency.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

It does not contain a single verifiable assertion, and it was drafted by a person who knew precisely what he was doing, and I am going to come back to that person.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

What it says, to the audience it was written for, is:\u00a0we know somebody.<\/em><\/p>\n

I read that sentence for the first time in a conference room in Jacksonville on a Thursday in the October with Deborah Quist on one side of me and an attorney I had hired the day before on the other, and I put the page down and I said a word I do not use at work.<\/p>\n

And then I said: “That’s not true.<\/p>\n

There is no such relationship.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

He does not have access to me.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

I have never given him one piece of procurement information in my life.”<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

And my attorney, whose name is Aaron Lindqvist and who I had known for about twenty-six hours at that point, said the sentence that reorganized my understanding of the next year.<\/p>\n

He said: “Camille.<\/p>\n

Nobody is going to allege that you gave him information.<\/p>\n

“The allegation is going to be that he sold the idea that you might.”<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Part Eleven: What Was Actually Being Sold<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

It took me a long time to accept the shape of what Dupont Enterprise Group had been doing, because it is not fraud in the way that the word is usually used, and for about four months I kept trying to make it into something cleaner.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Here is the shape of it.<\/p>\n

DEG did the work.<\/p>\n

That matters and I am going to say it more than once.<\/p>\n

They cut the grass and staffed the warehouses and serviced the vehicles and their past-performance ratings across eleven years are, with two exceptions, satisfactory or better.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Nobody was billing for services not rendered.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

There is no phantom employee anywhere in this case.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

What DEG was selling, in addition to grounds maintenance, was an impression.<\/p>\n

The federal market is enormous and opaque and slow, and there is an entire economy of people who will tell a small company that they can help it get inside.<\/p>\n

Some of them can.<\/p>\n

Most of them are selling proximity, and proximity is unfalsifiable, and that is why it sells.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

What Christian had \u2014 and what almost nobody selling proximity actually has \u2014 was a wife with a warrant.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

He never had to use it.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

That is the part that took me longest.<\/p>\n

He never once asked me for information.<\/p>\n

Not one time in three years.<\/p>\n

I have gone through every email, every text, every calendar entry, and so did two investigators with far better tools than mine, and the finding on that point is unqualified: there is no request, no hint of a request, and no information that ever moved.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

He did not need the information.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

He needed the sentence.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Because when a mid-sized facilities firm is trying to get onto a teaming arrangement with a large prime, and the prime’s business development director is deciding between four subcontractors who all cut grass adequately, a bulleted line about\u00a0direct relationships at the contracting officer level<\/em>\u00a0and a chairman who mentions, in the right tone, at the right moment, that his wife is in the business \u2014 that is worth something.<\/p>\n

It is worth, on the government’s own reconstruction, somewhere between six and nine million dollars of subcontract revenue over three years, and it cannot be proved to a dollar, and nobody ever tried.<\/p>\n

The investigator who eventually walked me through it \u2014 a special agent from the inspector general’s office named Marisol Tejeda \u2014 put it to me in a way I have repeated since.<\/p>\n

She said: “He wasn’t selling your access.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

He was renting your name and never telling you the property was on the market.”<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Part Twelve: The Certificate of Appointment<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

On the fourteenth of October my warrant was suspended.<\/p>\n

The memorandum is one page.<\/p>\n

It is addressed to me and copied to four people.<\/p>\n

It states that pending the outcome of an administrative review, my authority under my Certificate of Appointment is suspended in full, that I am to take no action on any open file, that my signature authority in three named systems has been disabled as of 0700 that morning, and that I am detailed, effective immediately, to a position in acquisition policy and records management.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

It is signed by my director, whose name is Dell Boykin, and who I have worked for since 2019, and who had to walk it to my desk himself.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

He put it down and he said, “This is not a finding.”<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

And I said, “I know what it is.”<\/p>\n

And he said, “No, Camille, I need you to hear me say it, because I have watched three people in my career have this exact morning and two of them never came back and it was not because of anything anybody found.”<\/p>\n

The suspension was correct.<\/p>\n

I want to be precise about this because it is the part where people expect me to be bitter and I am not.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

If an allegation exists that a warranted contracting officer’s spouse has been marketing access to her, then that officer cannot sign contracts while that allegation is open.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Not because she is guilty.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Because every contract she signs in the interim is a contract somebody can challenge for the next six years, and because a protest that says\u00a0the contracting officer was under investigation for spousal influence at the time of award<\/em>\u00a0does not have to be true to cost the government eighteen months and a re-competition.<\/p>\n

The suspension was not about me.<\/p>\n

It was about the integrity of the paper.<\/p>\n

I understood that on the fourteenth of October and I could have written that paragraph on the fourteenth of October, and I still sat in a parking structure for fifty minutes that evening before I could drive.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Records management is on the second floor.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

It is a real function and the people who do it are not being punished; they are doing a job that has to be done and that I had frankly never thought about once in eleven years.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

I did that job for eleven months.<\/p>\n

I was good at it by about the third month, which surprised me and which I have decided not to be embarrassed about.<\/p>\n

I rewrote a file plan that had not been touched since 2014.<\/p>\n

I found nine hundred and forty cubic feet of paper that should have been dispositioned in 2017 and got it dispositioned.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

I am, apparently, the reason a certain retention schedule exists in a certain agency, and one day somebody will find that irritating.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The thing about those eleven months that I did not expect, and that took me a year to say out loud to Dr.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Sorokin, is this.<\/p>\n

Nobody was unkind to me.<\/p>\n

Not one person.<\/p>\n

Not once.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

There was no whispering.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

My people sent me things.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Two of them asked me to lunch on the first Friday specifically, I am sure, so that I would be seen at lunch.<\/p>\n

And I found that almost impossible to be in the room with, for about four months, because I had spent thirty-six hours in the September building a version of my own life in which I could not afford to need anybody, and then a woman named Priya from contract administration left a bag of satsumas on my desk on a Tuesday with no note, and I had to go and sit in my car.<\/p>\n

Part Thirteen: Six Minutes<\/strong><\/p>\n

I spoke to Christian once.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Once, properly, with both of us knowing what we knew, and it lasted six minutes and it was on the telephone and it happened on the eighth of October, which is the day before what would have been our third anniversary, which I did not plan and did not notice until afterward.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The three weeks in between are not a dramatic gap.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

He was in Savannah, which is what he always was.<\/p>\n

I was in a conference room with lawyers, and I had told him I had a project and would be unreachable, which he accepted without a single follow-up question, because he had spent three years being grateful for exactly that sentence.<\/p>\n

My lawyers wanted me to have no contact at all.<\/p>\n

Both of them.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Aaron on the federal side and Estelle Baptiste on the divorce, and they were correct, and I did it anyway, and I told them afterward, and Estelle was furious with me for approximately one afternoon.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

I did it because I needed to know one thing, and because I knew that after that week there would never be a moment when he would answer a question without a lawyer sitting beside him, and because there was something I had to hear in his actual voice.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

He picked up on the second ring and he said, “Hey.<\/p>\n

Where have you been?”<\/p>\n

And I said: “I was in the third row.”<\/p>\n

There was a pause.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

I have listened to that pause in my memory perhaps a thousand times and I have never decided how long it was.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

I think four seconds.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

And what he said, at the end of it, was: “Okay.”<\/p>\n

Not\u00a0what.<\/em>\u00a0Not\u00a0what are you talking about.<\/em>\u00a0Not one second of denial.<\/p>\n

He took four seconds, he recognized the position, and he said\u00a0okay<\/em>, which is what a man says when a deal has closed against him.<\/p>\n

I said: “I’m not going to shout at you.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

I have one question and then I’m going to hang up and everything after this goes through lawyers.”<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

He said, “Cam\u2014”<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

I said: “Does she know?”<\/p>\n

And there was another pause, and this one was longer, and then Christian Dupont said the single true sentence he has ever said to me about any of it.<\/p>\n

He said: “No.”<\/p>\n

And then, before I could hang up, because he could hear that I was going to: “Camille.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Listen.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

It isn’t what you think.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

She doesn’t \u2014 there’s a whole thing with her father’s estate, there’s a reason for the timing, I was going to fix it, I had a plan for how\u2014”<\/p>\n

And I said, “Christian.<\/p>\n

What was the plan?”<\/p>\n

And he said, “What?”<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

And I said: “You married her on Saturday.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

You are married to me.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

There is no divorce filed in any county in this state.<\/p>\n

So the plan required one of the two of us to stop existing on paper.<\/p>\n

What was the plan?”<\/p>\n

Six minutes.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

That is where it ended, at about five and a half, and the last thing he said was my name, and I put the telephone face-down on a kitchen counter in my sister’s house and stood there with both hands on the counter for a while.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

He never answered that question.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Not to me, not to an investigator, not in a courtroom, not to his own attorney in any document I have ever seen.<\/p>\n

And I have come to believe \u2014 and Dr.<\/p>\n

Sorokin thinks this is right and Marisol Tejeda thinks it is right and it is the only conclusion the material supports \u2014 that the reason he never answered it is that there was no plan.<\/p>\n

There was never a plan.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

There was a man who had been getting away with running two lives for three years, who had found that each new thing he got away with cost less than the last one, and who had arrived at a point where he could sign a sworn document twice, take a four-hour premarital course, and stand under a live oak in front of three hundred people, without ever once sitting down and asking himself what Tuesday was going to look like.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Part Fourteen: The Voicemail<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

He called nine times over the following week and I did not answer any of them, and on the Thursday at twenty to three in the morning he left a voicemail that runs four minutes and eleven seconds.<\/p>\n

I did not listen to it for six weeks.<\/p>\n

Then I listened to it once and gave it to Estelle, and it has since been listened to by a number of people whose job it was, and it was played, in part, at a hearing.<\/p>\n

I am going to describe it rather than quote it, because I have quoted it exactly twice and both times I regretted it.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

The first ninety seconds are an apology, and it is the best apology I have ever received from him, and it is specific and it is articulate and at one point his voice goes.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The next sixty seconds are about his father.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

The next sixty seconds are about the company \u2014 about what a review would do, about the people who work there, about a man named Dwayne who has been driving a truck for DEG since 1994 and has two kids in college, and about how none of this is Dwayne’s fault.<\/p>\n

And then the last forty seconds are a question, and the question is whether I have talked to anybody.<\/p>\n

That is the architecture.<\/p>\n

Apology, father, Dwayne, and then\u00a0have you talked to anybody.<\/em><\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

I have thought about whether he constructed it in that order deliberately.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

I do not think he did.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

I think that is genuinely the order those things sit in inside him, and I think that is much more frightening than if he had planned it, and I think he would be astonished and hurt to be told that the last forty seconds contaminate the first ninety.<\/p>\n

Aaron Lindqvist, who had by then read everything, said something about that voicemail that I have not been able to improve on.<\/p>\n

He said: “He’s not lying to you in this.<\/p>\n

That’s the problem.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

He means all four parts.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

He has just never once had to put them in a room together and see which one wins.”<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Part Fifteen: Robert Dupont<\/strong><\/p>\n

Robert Dupont came to see me on the nineteenth of October.<\/p>\n

He did not call ahead.<\/p>\n

He drove from Palm Beach to Jacksonville, four and a half hours at seventy-eight years old, and he stood in the lobby of my sister’s building with his hat in his hand \u2014 an actual hat, he is that kind of man \u2014 and asked the concierge to ring up.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

I should not have let him up.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Aaron told me so afterward in a voice I had not heard him use.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

I let him up because I had loved that man for three years.<\/p>\n

He taught me to fish.<\/p>\n

He came to my mother’s surgery.<\/p>\n

In 2022 he drove two hours to my office with a casserole dish because I had mentioned on a telephone call that I had a cold.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

He sat in my sister’s living room and he did not take anything to drink and he said, first, that he was sorry, and he cried, and it was awful and I believed it.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

And then, after about eleven minutes, Robert Dupont said this:<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

“Camille, I want to ask you something and I want you to think before you answer.<\/p>\n

“Is there a version of this where it stays in the family?”<\/p>\n

I said, “What does that mean.”<\/p>\n

And he said: “It means the boy has done something unforgivable to you and he is going to pay for it and I will see to that personally.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

“And it means there are ninety-one people on a payroll who did not do anything to you at all.”<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

I said, “Robert.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

I made a disclosure to my agency eight days ago.<\/p>\n

It is already not in the family.<\/p>\n

It stopped being in the family at ten past eight in the morning on the sixteenth of September, which was about forty hours after I found out.”<\/p>\n

And he went very quiet.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

And then he said the thing that ended it, and I do not think he heard himself say it, and I have never been able to decide whether that makes it better or worse.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

He said: “Forty hours.”<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

And I said, “Yes.”<\/p>\n

And Robert Dupont said: “You didn’t come to us first.”<\/p>\n

Part Sixteen: The Letter<\/strong><\/p>\n

The letter arrived on the thirty-first of October, by courier, to Estelle Baptiste’s office, and it runs to five pages on the letterhead of a firm in Palm Beach and it is signed by a lawyer named Hollis Trager who has acted for the Dupont family since 1996.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

It is a good letter.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

I want to say that, because I have heard it described as a threat and it is not a threat and a threat would have been much easier to deal with.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

It proposes, in numbered paragraphs:<\/p>\n

That the parties dissolve their marriage by uncontested petition on a simplified basis, with the filing to be made in Palm Beach County at a date of my choosing.<\/p>\n

That Mr.<\/p>\n

Dupont makes no claim of any kind on the property in Palm Beach, the mortgage on which he acknowledges he has never contributed to, and executes a quitclaim on the day of filing.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

That Mr.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Dupont pays a sum in settlement of any and all claims, the figure for which is in paragraph nine and which I am not going to put in this account, and which was substantial and which was, Estelle told me, about forty per cent more than a court would ever have given me.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

That Mr.<\/p>\n

Dupont pays my legal fees, both family and \u2014 and here the drafting becomes careful \u2014 “any related administrative representation.”<\/p>\n

And then paragraph fourteen.<\/p>\n

Paragraph fourteen is a mutual non-disparagement and confidentiality provision.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

It is four hundred and some words.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

It is, Aaron told me, a perfectly standard instrument that appears in a very large number of settlements every year and that is not, in itself, improper.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

What it says, stripped of the drafting, is that neither party will make any statement concerning the other or concerning any entity affiliated with the other, to any third party, including to any journalist, and that neither party will voluntarily participate in or initiate any proceeding, inquiry, review or complaint concerning the other or any such affiliated entity, save where compelled by lawful process.<\/p>\n

Save where compelled by lawful process.<\/p>\n

That is the whole of it.<\/p>\n

Six words, and they are not sinister, and they are in every agreement of this kind, and they are the reason I did not sign.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Because\u00a0compelled by lawful process<\/em>\u00a0means a subpoena.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

It means: you may answer if somebody makes you.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

It means you may not pick up a telephone.<\/p>\n

And by the thirty-first of October I had already picked up the telephone, and the review was already open, and the letter was not asking me to undo that, because Hollis Trager is a competent lawyer and knew he could not ask for that and did not.<\/p>\n

The letter was asking for what came next.<\/p>\n

Part Seventeen: What I Did Not Sign<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Estelle Baptiste is fifty-four and has practised family law in Duval County for twenty-six years and she is not a romantic about any of it.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

She put the letter down and she said: “I want to be extremely clear with you about what I am about to say, because I am going to give you advice and then I am going to tell you not to take it.”<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

She said the money was real and the offer was excellent and that in her professional judgement, as a matter of the family case and nothing else, I should take it, and that she would be failing me if she did not say so in those words.<\/p>\n

She said that fighting it would take between fourteen months and three years, that I would win less, that I would spend a great deal of what I won, and that the thing I actually wanted \u2014 which she identified, correctly, without my having told her \u2014 was not obtainable in a family court under any circumstances.<\/p>\n

And then she said: “And you are not going to take it, and I know that, and here is what I want you to understand about why.<\/p>\n

“It is not because paragraph fourteen is wicked.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

It is not.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

It is because paragraph fourteen costs you nothing today and everything on a day you cannot see from here.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

“You have a woman in this story who does not know what happened to her.<\/p>\n

If you sign this, you cannot tell her.<\/p>\n

Not ever, not in ten years, not at a funeral.<\/p>\n

You can be made to tell her by a court and you cannot choose to.”<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

I did not sign it.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The counter we sent was three pages and it accepted almost everything in the letter, at a significantly lower number, and struck paragraph fourteen entirely and replaced it with a mutual non-disparagement provision that says nothing about proceedings, inquiries or third parties.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

It took nine weeks and four rounds.<\/p>\n

They came back on fourteen twice.<\/p>\n

The second time, the redline was down to a single phrase and Hollis Trager telephoned Estelle personally to ask whether there was any formulation at all that would work, and Estelle said no, and he said, “I understand,” and that was the end of it.<\/p>\n

I have been asked whether I regret the money.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

The difference, in the end, between what I accepted and what was on the table on the thirty-first of October is a number I know precisely, and it is about what I would earn in two and a half years.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

And on the eleventh of February I sat across a table from a woman in a coffee shop in Savannah and told her what had happened to her, and I was legally permitted to do it, and that is what the number bought.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

I would pay it again.<\/p>\n

I have not had one bad night about it.<\/p>\n

There are about six things in this account that I did right and that one is the only one I did not have to be talked into.<\/p>\n

Part Eighteen: Giselle<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

I need to say who she was, because for seventeen years she had been, to me, a photograph in a yearbook.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Giselle Marchetti was in my class at a high school in Saint Augustine from 2002 to 2006.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

She was not a friend.<\/p>\n

She was not an enemy.<\/p>\n

She was one of about forty people I knew reasonably and lost completely.<\/p>\n

What I remembered was that she played volleyball, that her mother taught third grade, and that in eleventh-grade chemistry she sat two rows over and once loaned me a calculator and never asked for it back, and that I still have it in a drawer, which is a fact I did not think about at all until the September and have thought about a great deal since.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

What I learned afterward is this.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

She went to Florida State and did hospitality management.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

She worked for a hotel group in Tampa for six years and hated it.<\/p>\n

In 2016 she started an event-planning business out of her apartment in Jacksonville with one client and a folding table.<\/p>\n

By the time she met Christian she had four employees, an office in Riverside, and a book of business that was mostly corporate \u2014 awards dinners, incentive weekends, the annual meeting of a regional bank, a great deal of work for two hospital foundations.<\/p>\n

She was thirty-eight.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

She had been engaged once before, in 2014, and had ended it herself.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Her father died in the November of the year before the wedding.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Pancreatic.<\/p>\n

It took four months from diagnosis and she closed the office for three weeks and moved back into the house in Saint Augustine to nurse him and she was there when he died.<\/p>\n

And Christian Dupont met her in the January of that same year \u2014 ten months before her father died and fourteen months before the wedding \u2014 at a corporate event in Amelia Island that her firm ran and that DEG sponsored a table at.<\/p>\n

I know the date.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

I know the room.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

I have seen the seating chart, because her firm keeps them.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

He was at table eleven.<\/p>\n

She was working.<\/p>\n

And the thing about the timeline that I could not put down for about six months, and that I eventually had to be talked out of holding against myself, is this: for four of those fourteen months, Giselle Marchetti’s father was dying, and a man was driving from Palm Beach to Saint Augustine to sit in that house with her, and telling me he was in Savannah.<\/p>\n

He was, at that time, extremely kind to me.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Unusually so.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

That autumn is, if I am honest and I am trying to be, one of the better stretches of my marriage.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Dr.<\/p>\n

Sorokin says that is not a contradiction and that I keep presenting it as one.<\/p>\n

She says a man who is being kind in two houses is not dividing a finite quantity of kindness.<\/p>\n

He is producing more of it, because he needs more of it, and it is real in both houses, and the fact that it is real is exactly what makes it useless as evidence of anything.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Part Nineteen: The Message<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

I sent Giselle Marchetti a message on the third of February.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

It took me eleven days to write and it is four sentences long, and I wrote somewhere in the region of forty drafts, and three of them are still in a folder because Estelle told me to keep every version.<\/p>\n

The drafts I rejected fall into two categories and I think the categories are instructive.<\/p>\n

The first category is the ones that explain.<\/p>\n

They are long.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

They lay out the licence, the two applications, the date in the June of 2019, the photographs.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

One of them is eleven hundred words and has a numbered chronology in it, because of course it does.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Every one of those is unsendable, and it took me nine days to work out why, and the reason is that they are all, without exception, arguing a case.<\/p>\n

They are all trying to make her believe it in the first reading.<\/p>\n

Which means they are all, structurally, a document produced by somebody who wants something from her.<\/p>\n

The second category is worse.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

The second category is the ones that apologize.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

I wrote at least eight drafts that opened by apologizing to her, and Dr.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Sorokin took one look at that and asked me what I thought I was apologizing for, and I could not answer, and we spent an hour on it, and what I eventually got to was that I wanted her to like me.<\/p>\n

Which is a monstrous thing to want from a woman you are about to do this to.<\/p>\n

What I sent, on the third of February, at eleven o’clock in the morning, from my own name, was this:<\/p>\n

Giselle \u2014 this is Camille Aubrey, from Ketterlinus.<\/em><\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

I need to tell you something about your husband and it is serious and it is not something I should put in a message.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

I am not asking you for anything and there is nothing I want from you.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

If you are willing to meet me anywhere you choose, at any time, I will come to you.<\/p>\n

She read it at 11:04.<\/p>\n

She did not reply for six days.<\/p>\n

Part Twenty: Six Days<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

I have since been told what the six days contained, and I am including it because it is the only part of this account where I was not the one doing anything and because it is, I think, the best conduct by anybody in the whole of it.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

On the third of February, Giselle Marchetti read a message from a woman she had not spoken to in seventeen years telling her that there was something serious about her husband.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

She did not show it to Christian.<\/p>\n

She did not reply.<\/p>\n

She did not screenshot it into the class group chat.<\/p>\n

She did not call four friends.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

What she did, that afternoon, was sit in her office in Riverside with the door shut and write down every fact she could establish independently about the man she had married in September, on a legal pad, in two columns: things she had documents for, and things she had only been told.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

She has shown me that page.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

The second column is much longer than the first, and she says that took her about twenty minutes to notice and that she then sat looking at it for an hour.<\/p>\n

On the fourth she called her sister Rosalind, who is a paralegal in Ocala, and asked her one question, which was how a person finds out whether somebody has been divorced.<\/p>\n

Rosalind told her: the clerk of court in the county where the divorce was filed.<\/p>\n

Public index.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Case number, style of the case, final judgment of dissolution of marriage.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

And Giselle said, “What if I don’t know what county.”<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

And Rosalind said, “Then you look in the ones he’s lived in.”<\/p>\n

On the fifth and sixth she searched the public indexes of six Florida counties for the name Dupont and found no dissolution of marriage in any of them.<\/p>\n

On the sixth she searched the official records index in Palm Beach County and found a marriage recorded in October 2021 between Christian R.<\/p>\n

Dupont and Camille N.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Aubrey.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

And on the seventh \u2014 and this is the part I find almost unbearable \u2014 she paid for a certified copy of it, because she had decided that she was not going to sit across a table from me holding nothing.<\/p>\n

She replied on the ninth of February at ten past seven in the evening.<\/p>\n

The reply is one line.<\/p>\n

There’s a place on Abercorn called Foxglove.<\/em><\/p>\n

Wednesday, 2pm.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

I know what you’re going to tell me.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Come anyway.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

I read that at a kitchen table and I put my head down on my arms.<\/p>\n

Because\u00a0I know what you’re going to tell me<\/em>\u00a0meant she had done the work.<\/p>\n

And\u00a0come anyway<\/em>\u00a0meant she had understood, inside six days, entirely alone, with no help from anybody, that the thing she needed was not the information.<\/p>\n

Part Twenty-One: Foxglove<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

She was already there when I arrived, twenty minutes early, at a table at the back, with a folder in front of her and a coffee she had not touched.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

I had rehearsed an opening.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

I had rehearsed four.<\/p>\n

What actually happened is that I got to the table and she stood up, which I had not expected, and we did the thing that two women who have not seen each other in seventeen years do, which is a half-second of hesitation and then an embrace, and then both of us sat down and neither of us could speak for a bit.<\/p>\n

And then Giselle Marchetti opened her folder and pushed a certified copy of my own marriage certificate across the table at me and said:<\/p>\n

“Is this you.”<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

And I said, “Yes.”<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

And she said, “Is it current.”<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

And I said, “Yes.<\/p>\n

There’s no divorce.<\/p>\n

There’s never been a petition filed anywhere in the state.”<\/p>\n

She nodded once and took the certificate back and squared it up on the table and put her hands flat on top of it, and then she said, in a completely level voice:<\/p>\n

“Okay.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

I’ve had six days.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

I’m not going to fall apart in front of you, and if I do I’d like you to just let it happen and not touch me.”<\/p>\n

She did not fall apart.<\/p>\n

She asked questions for two hours and ten minutes.<\/p>\n

They were, in order and I have not rearranged them: how long had I known; how had I found out; whether I had been at the wedding; whether anybody else in the family had known; whether I had told the police; whether I had told anybody at her firm; what my job was; what my job had to do with any of it; whether her business was in danger; whether there was money involved; and, at about the ninety-minute mark, the one she had been working toward the whole time, which was:<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

“Do you think he loves me?”<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

I had thought about that question for eleven days and I had an answer prepared and I did not use it.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

What I said was: “I think that is the wrong question and I think you will get to that on your own in about four months, and I am not going to be the person who tells you your own marriage wasn’t real.”<\/p>\n

And she said, “It wasn’t, though.<\/p>\n

Legally.<\/p>\n

Was it.”<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

And I said, “No. Legally it wasn’t.”<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

And Giselle put her face in her hands for about forty seconds and then took them away and said, “Right.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Okay.<\/p>\n

Tell me about the photographs.<\/p>\n

Rosalind says you said something about photographs.”<\/p>\n

And I said, “The ones in the kitchen.”<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

And she said, “Those are at the Palm Beach house.”<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

And I said, “Yes.”<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

And she said, “He told me it was his.”<\/p>\n

And I said, “It’s mine.<\/p>\n

I bought it in 2019.<\/p>\n

I redid that kitchen.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

That’s my window.”<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

And that \u2014 not the marriage certificate, not the two licence applications, not the fact that her wedding was void \u2014 that is the thing that broke her, in a coffee shop on Abercorn Street on a Wednesday afternoon, and she cried for about six minutes and I did not touch her because she had asked me not to, and a woman at the next table very quietly got up and moved.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Part Twenty-Two: What She Had Been Told<\/strong><\/p>\n

I want to lay out, once, what Christian Dupont had told Giselle Marchetti, because every time I have described this to somebody their first instinct is that she should have known, and because the construction is genuinely excellent and because I want it on the record that I lived with the man for three years and did not know either.<\/p>\n

He told her he had been married.<\/p>\n

He volunteered that in the first month, unprompted.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

He told her it ended in 2019.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

He told her it had been short and bad and that he did not want to talk about it, and then, over about four months, in fragments, he told her more, because a man who refuses to discuss something once is hiding it and a man who lets it out slowly is healing.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

He told her that his ex-wife was a federal employee in Jacksonville, which is true.<\/p>\n

He told her that they had bought a house in Palm Beach together and that the divorce had left it in a tangle \u2014 that she held the title, that he had put money into it, that there was an arrangement whereby he still had use of it and still paid toward it and that his lawyer had told him to leave it alone until it could be unwound cleanly.<\/p>\n

Which explains why he had keys.<\/p>\n

Which explains why he could bring her there in the evening.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Which explains why there was a woman’s handwriting on a calendar in the kitchen and why there were things in the closet and why, on one occasion in the November, Giselle found a prescription bottle in a bathroom cabinet with my name on it.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

She asked about that one.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

She told me so, and she was very clear that she wanted me to know she had asked.<\/p>\n

And Christian said: “She’s still got half her stuff there.<\/p>\n

It’s the whole problem.<\/p>\n

That’s the thing I can’t get her to deal with.”<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Which is an answer that produces sympathy and closes the subject in eleven words.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

He told her he travelled to Palm Beach three or four days a week for the business, which is true and is the same sentence he told me in reverse.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

He kept two telephones.<\/p>\n

The second one is a company device, which is an ordinary thing for a man who runs a company to have, and neither of us ever found it strange.<\/p>\n

He never introduced her to his father.<\/p>\n

That one she did find strange, and she raised it, twice, and the answer both times was that Robert was ill and difficult and that it would happen and that he wanted it to be right.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Robert Dupont did not attend the wedding in September.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Nobody from the Dupont family attended the wedding in September.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Giselle told me, at that table, that the explanation she had been given was a scheduling catastrophe involving a board meeting and a hospital appointment, and that she had accepted it, and that her own mother had been furious about it for a week and had then let it go.<\/p>\n

And she said: “I had three hundred people in that courtyard and forty of them were mine and the rest were his, and not one single person on his side was related to him, and I looked at that in the photographs in October and I thought: that’s sad.<\/p>\n

That’s a sad family.”<\/p>\n

Part Twenty-Three: The Mechanics<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

The question I get asked most often, by a very wide margin, is not how I felt.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

It is:\u00a0how did he do it?<\/em><\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

People want it to be complicated.<\/p>\n

They want burner phones and a storage unit and a spreadsheet.<\/p>\n

It was not complicated.<\/p>\n

I have seen the reconstruction \u2014 two investigators built one, because the federal side needed to know where he actually was on certain dates \u2014 and it is about nine pages and it is almost entirely boring, and the boringness is the finding.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Here is how a man runs two households a hundred and eighty miles apart for fourteen months.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

He did not lie about where he was. He lied about what the place was.<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Christian was, genuinely, in north Florida three or four days a week.<\/p>\n

He had been for years.<\/p>\n

The Jacksonville office is real, it has eleven employees, and he was in it constantly and everybody there saw him and nobody there thought anything.<\/p>\n

What changed in the January was not his movements.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

It was that the hotel stopped being a hotel.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Which is why nothing in our household showed anything.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

The mileage did not change.<\/p>\n

The pattern did not change.<\/p>\n

There was no new absence to notice, because the absence had been there since 2021 and I had built my life around it and called it a marriage.<\/p>\n

He used one telephone for both of us.<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

This is the part that people refuse to believe and it is in the records.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

There is no burner.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

There is no second SIM.<\/p>\n

There is a personal telephone and a company telephone, which he had carried since 2016, and both of us were in both of them, under our own names, with our own photographs.<\/p>\n

Because a second secret telephone is a thing that has to be hidden, charged, and explained, and a man who has two telephones for perfectly ordinary reasons has already solved the problem.<\/p>\n

He simply answered the company one in front of me and the personal one in front of her, and if that ever went wrong it went wrong as an ordinary rudeness rather than a suspicious one.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

He never lied about small things.<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

This is the one I have thought hardest about, because it is counter-intuitive and because it is, I now think, the actual technique.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Christian Dupont was, in three years, scrupulously honest about trivia.<\/p>\n

He told me when he was in a bad mood and why.<\/p>\n

He told me he had had two drinks when he had had two drinks.<\/p>\n

When he forgot something he said he had forgotten it instead of inventing a reason.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Which means that in three years I never once caught him in a small lie, and a person who has never caught you in a small lie does not go looking for a large one.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Giselle said, independently, without either of us having mentioned it, almost exactly the same thing at that table in Savannah.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

She said: “He was honest about everything.<\/p>\n

Everything.<\/p>\n

It’s the only thing I’d have said about him.”<\/p>\n

He kept the two worlds apart geographically and let the calendar do the rest.<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

There was no crisis of overlap, because there was never any overlap to manage.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

My family is in Palm Beach County and Ocala.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Hers is in St.<\/p>\n

Johns.<\/p>\n

His business is in three cities and his employees are used to not knowing where he is.<\/p>\n

We are both thirty-eight and neither of us had a single mutual acquaintance with the other until a class of 2006 group chat put us in the same rectangle.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

The one genuine near-collision happened in the July, at an airport, and I did not know about it until an investigator asked me a question about a flight and I had to look up my own calendar.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

And the last one, which is the answer people are actually looking for and do not like:<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Nobody checks.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Not the county clerk, who has no database to check against.<\/p>\n

Not the church that ran the premarital course, which does not ask for anything.<\/p>\n

Not the venue, not the officiant, not the photographer, not the printer.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Not his own employees, who assumed.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Not his father, who \u2014 and this is in a sworn statement and I have made my peace with it, more or less \u2014 knew there was a woman in Jacksonville, had known since the spring, had said something to his son about it once, had been told it was under control, and did not know about a wedding until the following October.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Marisol Tejeda put the nine pages down in front of me in the March and said something I have quoted since in two different rooms.<\/p>\n

She said: “Ms.<\/p>\n

Aubrey, I have been doing this nineteen years.<\/p>\n

People think these things are built.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

They’re not built.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

They’re just not stopped.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

“There is no machinery here.<\/p>\n

There’s a man who found out in the February that nothing happened when he did it, and found out again in the March, and by the September he had run the experiment about four hundred times and it had come back the same way every time.<\/p>\n

“That’s not a scheme.<\/p>\n

That’s an absence of friction.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

And there is a great deal more of it in the world than there is of schemes.”<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Part Twenty-Four: Void<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Here is the law, and it is short, and it is the part everybody gets wrong.<\/p>\n

A marriage entered into by a person who is already married is void.<\/p>\n

Not voidable \u2014 void.<\/p>\n

It has no legal effect from the beginning.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

It does not need to be dissolved, because there is nothing there to dissolve.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Which sounds clean and is not, because Giselle Marchetti was not living inside the law.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

She was living inside an enormous quantity of paper that said she was married.<\/p>\n

There was a recorded marriage certificate in St.<\/p>\n

Johns County with her name on it.<\/p>\n

She had changed her name with the Social Security Administration in the October.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

She had a new driver’s licence.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

She had changed the beneficiary on a life policy and on a retirement account.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

She had filed a joint federal tax return in the January.<\/p>\n

She had signed a lease on a larger office in December as Giselle Dupont.<\/p>\n

And so what Florida actually requires \u2014 because there is no annulment statute in this state, it is a creature of the courts \u2014 is that you go and ask a circuit judge to declare that the thing was void.<\/p>\n

She filed in March.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

It was styled as a petition for declaration of nullity of marriage.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

It was unopposed; Christian’s lawyer filed an answer admitting the allegations, which was the only sensible thing available to him.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

It took until the following January.<\/p>\n

Ten months, for a marriage that never legally existed for a single second.<\/p>\n

I gave a deposition in it, in the June, for three hours and forty minutes, and it is the only proceeding in this whole matter in which I was a witness and not a subject, and I would like to record that it was the best day of that year.<\/p>\n

The final judgment is two pages.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

It declares the marriage void ab initio, restores her former name, and reserves jurisdiction on one narrow financial question that was resolved later by agreement.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

She framed it.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

She has it on the wall of her office, in a black frame, at eye level, behind her desk where clients can see it, and when they ask \u2014 and she says they ask about twice a month \u2014 she tells them.<\/p>\n

I asked her once whether that was wise, professionally.<\/p>\n

And Giselle said: “Camille, I plan weddings for a living now.<\/p>\n

Half my business is weddings.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Do you know what people want from the person planning their wedding?<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

“They want somebody who is not sentimental about it.”<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Part Twenty-Five: A Crime Nobody Charges<\/strong><\/p>\n

Bigamy is a felony in Florida.<\/p>\n

Third degree.<\/p>\n

Up to five years.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

The statute is old and short and it has not been substantially amended in a very long time, and prosecutions under it are extremely rare, and I want to explain why, because I spent four months being angry about it and the explanation eventually did most of the work of making me stop.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Giselle and I went together, in the April, to the state attorney’s office in St.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Johns County, and we sat with an assistant state attorney named Corinne Delahoussaye for an hour and ten minutes, and we had a folder that by then was very good.<\/p>\n

She took it seriously.<\/p>\n

She did not do the thing I was braced for, which was to treat two women in a conference room as a domestic matter.<\/p>\n

She read the two licence applications twice and she made a noise at the second one.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

And then she explained the landscape.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Bigamy prosecutions in this country are, in the overwhelming majority, brought as an add-on.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

They ride along with a fraud case.<\/p>\n

A man marries four women and takes money from all of them; the bigamy count is the narrative spine and the theft counts are the sentence.<\/p>\n

Standing alone, it is a charge that state attorneys’ offices decline, and the reasons are not good ones and they are not corrupt ones.<\/p>\n

They are: there is rarely a financial loss to a specific victim; the harm is enormous and almost impossible to describe to a jury in terms that fit a statute; and a first-time non-violent third-degree felony in Florida with a defendant of good record ends, in the real world, in a withhold of adjudication and probation.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Corinne Delahoussaye said: “I can charge this.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

I want to be clear that I can and that it is a good file.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

“What I can’t promise you is that charging it gets you anything that this” \u2014 and she put her hand on the licence applications \u2014 “doesn’t already get you in a civil courtroom and in front of whatever federal people are looking at that company.<\/p>\n

“And I want you both to know the cost, because nobody tells victims the cost.<\/p>\n

If I charge it, both of you are witnesses.<\/p>\n

Everything either of you has said to a lawyer, to a therapist, to each other, becomes potentially discoverable.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Your deposition” \u2014 to Giselle \u2014 “becomes a public record with your business’s name on it.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

And it runs for two years.”<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Giselle asked one question.<\/p>\n

She said: “If you don’t charge it, does the fact that he did it go away?”<\/p>\n

And Delahoussaye said, “No.<\/p>\n

It’s in the nullity judgment.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

It’s in the licence file.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

It’s permanent and it’s public.”<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

And Giselle said, “Then I don’t want it.”<\/p>\n

I did want it.<\/p>\n

I want that on the record.<\/p>\n

I sat in that room and I wanted a criminal charge and I wanted it very badly and I said so in the car afterward at some volume.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

And Giselle Marchetti, driving, said the sentence that I have thought about more than any other sentence anybody said to me in that year.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

She said: “Camille.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

You want him convicted of marrying me.<\/p>\n

“I don’t want that to be the thing that’s true about me for the rest of my life.”<\/p>\n

The office declined to file.<\/p>\n

The declination memorandum is one page and is entirely defensible and I have read it four times.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

It was the correct decision and I did not think so for about ten months.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Part Twenty-Six: The Review<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

The federal side took eleven months and two weeks and it had nothing to do with any of that.<\/p>\n

I want to describe what an administrative review of this kind actually is, because television has done a great deal of damage here and because the reality is slower, duller and much more frightening.<\/p>\n

Nobody came to my house.<\/p>\n

Nobody arrived at my office with three vehicles.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Nobody said the word\u00a0raid<\/em>\u00a0at any point, to anybody, ever.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

What happened is that my disclosure went from Deborah Quist to the agency’s designated agency ethics official, and from there, the same week, as a referral, to the office of the inspector general, which is an independent statutory body inside the agency that does not answer to my chain of command and that I had never in eleven years had a single interaction with.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

The referral generated a case number on the twenty-third of September.<\/p>\n

And then, for five weeks, nothing happened at all.<\/p>\n

That is the part nobody prepares you for.<\/p>\n

I had blown up my own life in forty hours and made a referral about my own husband and had my warrant suspended, and then I sat on the second floor doing records disposition for five weeks in complete silence, and I have never in my life been worse company.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Special Agent Marisol Tejeda called on the twenty-ninth of October.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

I was interviewed four times.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

The first was two hours.<\/p>\n

The second was six and a half hours over two days.<\/p>\n

The third was ninety minutes.<\/p>\n

The fourth, in the following June, was forty minutes and was mostly about a single email from 2022.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Aaron Lindqvist was present at all four and said, in total, perhaps thirty words.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The questions were not what I expected.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

I had braced for hostility and there was none, and I eventually understood that this was not kindness, it was method: a hostile interview produces a defensive subject and a defensive subject produces a bad record.<\/p>\n

The questions were about paper.<\/p>\n

Had I ever had a DEG file.<\/p>\n

Had I ever sat on a source selection where DEG was an offeror or a proposed subcontractor.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Had I ever been asked to.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Had I ever recused myself, and if so, where was it written down.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Who had I told about the marriage in 2021, and in what form, and was there a document.<\/p>\n

What did I put on my Form 450, in each of four years.<\/p>\n

Had I ever discussed my work with my husband, and here she was specific and relentless in a way I have since come to admire: not\u00a0did you give him information<\/em>, but\u00a0describe the conversations you had at home about your day.<\/em><\/p>\n

That last one took about forty minutes and I found it the hardest thing in the whole interview, and I said so, and Tejeda said, “I know.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Everybody does.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Keep going.”<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Because of course I talked about my day.<\/p>\n

Everybody talks about their day.<\/p>\n

I complained about a protest.<\/p>\n

I said a vendor was impossible.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

I said, once, in a car, that a certain programme office could not write a requirement to save its life.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

None of that is procurement-sensitive information.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

None of it is protected.<\/p>\n

All of it is the kind of thing that, read aloud from a transcript eighteen months later by somebody who wants it to sound bad, sounds bad.<\/p>\n

Part Twenty-Seven: What They Found<\/strong><\/p>\n

The report of investigation is one hundred and forty-one pages plus exhibits and I have read the whole of it, twice, and I am going to give the findings honestly, including the one that is about me.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

On the central question:<\/strong>\u00a0no evidence was found that I had ever disclosed non-public procurement information to Christian Dupont or to any person affiliated with Dupont Enterprise Group, or that I had taken any official action affecting DEG’s financial interests, or that any DEG award or subcontract could be traced to any act of mine.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The language is:\u00a0The evidence does not substantiate the allegation.<\/em><\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

That is the strongest formulation available in that document.<\/p>\n

There is no\u00a0exonerated<\/em>.<\/p>\n

There is no\u00a0cleared<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Those words do not exist in this process and anybody who tells you they were exonerated by an administrative review has not read one.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

On DEG:<\/strong>\u00a0the capability statement language was found to constitute a misrepresentation of the firm’s relationship with agency personnel.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Two proposals were identified containing similar language.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

One of them, submitted to a prime contractor in 2023, contained a sentence I had not seen before and that I read in a conference room and had to put down.<\/p>\n

It says:\u00a0Our leadership’s household includes a serving federal contracting professional at the warrant level.<\/em><\/p>\n

Our leadership’s household.<\/p>\n

That is the nineteen words that ended a company, and there is not one false statement in it.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Every word of it was true.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

I was his household and I did have a warrant.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Marisol Tejeda said, when I put it down: “That’s the one.<\/p>\n

That’s the sentence.<\/p>\n

Everything else is puffery and that one is an inducement, and the difference is that this one was written to be relied on by a specific person on a specific bid.”<\/p>\n

On two near-misses:<\/strong>\u00a0the review identified two occasions on which a DEG bid came within one procurement layer of me.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

The first was in 2022.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

DEG was proposed as a subcontractor on a bid into a vehicle I administered.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

The prime withdrew for unrelated reasons nineteen days before proposals were due.<\/p>\n

I never saw a proposal.<\/p>\n

I did not know, and could not have known, and there is no document showing I ever did.<\/p>\n

The second was in the March of the year of the wedding, and the second one is mine, and it is the reason this account has a Part Twenty-Eight.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Part Twenty-Eight: The One Thing I Actually Did<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

In the March, a colleague \u2014 a contract specialist named Wes Aldaco, who is good at his job and who has done nothing wrong in any of this \u2014 came to my office and asked me an informal question about a market research package he was assembling.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

It was a five-minute conversation of a kind I have perhaps four hundred times a year.<\/p>\n

And one of the seven firms on his list was Dupont Enterprise Group.<\/p>\n

And I said: “Wes, DEG’s my husband’s company.<\/p>\n

Don’t ask me anything about this one.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Take it to Dell.”<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

And he said, “Oh \u2014 yeah.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Sorry.<\/p>\n

Of course.”<\/p>\n

And he took it to Dell Boykin, and Dell reassigned the whole package to another office the same week, and the process from that point forward was completely clean and no decision of any kind was ever made by me.<\/p>\n

Everything about that is correct except one thing.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

I did not write it down.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

There is no recusal memorandum.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

There is no email.<\/p>\n

There is no entry in the file.<\/p>\n

There is a five-minute conversation in a doorway between two people who both behaved properly and neither of whom generated a single piece of paper.<\/p>\n

The finding in the report is at paragraph 88 and it is four lines long and it says that the subject appropriately identified the conflict and appropriately declined to participate, but failed to document the recusal in writing as required by agency policy, and it recommends corrective action.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

The corrective action was a letter of counselling.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Not a reprimand.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

A letter of counselling, which is the lightest formal thing that exists, and which stays in a file for two years and then comes out.<\/p>\n

And I want to tell you what that four-line paragraph did to me, because it is disproportionate and I know it is disproportionate.<\/p>\n

I had spent eleven months being told I was fine.<\/p>\n

I had a hundred and forty-one pages saying that the thing I was most afraid of had not happened.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

And I read paragraph 88 in a conference room in the following August and I went out into a corridor and stood against a wall.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Because it is true.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Because for three years I had built my entire defence out of the proposition that my conduct was the part I controlled, and here, in four lines, was a March afternoon in which I had done the right thing in the wrong form, and had done it in a doorway, informally, because I was busy, because it was five minutes, because Wes is a friend, and because writing it down would have meant typing my husband’s company’s name into a memorandum and I did not want to.<\/p>\n

That is the honest reason.<\/p>\n

I have gone over it and gone over it and there is not a better one.<\/p>\n

Aaron Lindqvist, who had been waiting for me in the corridor because he had read paragraph 88 forty seconds before I did and had known exactly what would happen, said: “Camille.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

You want me to tell you that doesn’t matter.”<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

And I said, “Does it?”<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

And he said: “It matters exactly as much as it says it does.<\/p>\n

Four lines.<\/p>\n

A letter of counselling.<\/p>\n

That is the whole of it and it is not a story about your character.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

“And if you turn it into one, you will have done to yourself, for free, the thing that eleven months of investigation could not do to you.”<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Part Twenty-Nine: Raymond Carver<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

The man who wrote the sentence is named Raymond Carver and he was, for nine years, Dupont Enterprise Group’s senior vice president for government relations, which is a title that in a company of that size means one person with a laptop and a very good address book.<\/p>\n

He is sixty-three.<\/p>\n

He spent twenty-two years as a civilian in a federal contracting shop and retired as a branch chief, and then did what a great many people do, which is cross the street and sell what he knows to the people he used to buy from.<\/p>\n

There is nothing wrong with that.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

It is legal, it is common, it is, on the whole, useful.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

A small company that has never sold to the government does not know how, and somebody has to tell them.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Raymond Carver drafted the 2022 capability statement.<\/p>\n

He drafted the 2023 proposal.<\/p>\n

He drafted the sentence about the household, and when he was interviewed, in the February, he did something that I have had to work quite hard to be fair about.<\/p>\n

He co-operated immediately, comprehensively, and without being offered anything.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

He was interviewed for a total of nine hours.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

He produced his own drafts, his own redlines, his own emails, including four that are extremely bad for him and that nobody would ever have found.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

And what he said, which is in the report at some length, is this.<\/p>\n

He said that the language was his.<\/p>\n

He said nobody told him to write it.<\/p>\n

He said that in the February of 2022 he had been in a meeting where DEG had lost a teaming slot to a competitor and Christian had been angry, and that he had gone away and rewritten the capability statement over a weekend, and that he had put that section in because he had spent twenty-two years on the other side of the table and he knew exactly what a business development director looks for.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

He was asked whether Christian Dupont approved it.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

He said yes.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

He was asked whether Christian Dupont edited it.<\/p>\n

And he said \u2014 and this is verbatim from the report, and it is the most useful thing any witness said in eleven months:<\/p>\n

“He softened it.<\/em><\/p>\n

I had it naming the agency.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

He took the agency out and told me to keep the rest.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

He said, ‘Don’t say where.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Let them ask.'”<\/p>\n

That is the whole case against Christian Dupont in one line, and it came out of the mouth of the man who wrote the sentence, unprompted, in the ninth hour, in answer to a question about editing.<\/p>\n

Raymond Carver was not prosecuted.<\/p>\n

He entered into an agreement with the suspension and debarment official under which he is excluded from federal contracting work for a period of years, which at sixty-three is effectively permanent, and he did not contest it.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

I met him once, by accident, in the lobby of a building in Jacksonville in the following autumn.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

He recognized me before I recognized him.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

He stopped about ten feet away and he did not come any closer and he said: “Mrs.<\/p>\n

Dupont\u2014” and then stopped himself and said, “Ms.<\/p>\n

Aubrey.<\/p>\n

I wrote it.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

I want you to know I knew what I was doing when I wrote it and I want you to know I’ve said so everywhere anybody asked.”<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

And I said, “I know.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

I read it.”<\/p>\n

And he said, “Right,” and nodded twice, and walked out of the building.<\/p>\n

I have thought about that man a good deal.<\/p>\n

He is the only person in this account who did something indefensible and then did not spend one minute defending it.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Part Thirty: Show Cause<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Most people do not know that the federal government can simply stop doing business with a company, and that this happens by letter, and that it does not require a court.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

It is called suspension and debarment.<\/p>\n

Every agency has an official who does it.<\/p>\n

The standard is not criminal \u2014 it is whether the firm is presently responsible, which is a term of art and which means, roughly,\u00a0can we trust you to hold a contract.<\/em><\/p>\n

A suspension can be imposed immediately on adequate evidence.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

There is no hearing first.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The company gets notice, and it gets to respond in writing, and it can ask to be heard, and while that is happening it cannot receive new awards anywhere in the federal government.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Dupont Enterprise Group was suspended on the fourth of September of the following year, nearly a year after the wedding.<\/p>\n

The show-cause letter is nine pages.<\/p>\n

It attaches the capability statement, the two proposals, and eleven pages of Raymond Carver’s interview.<\/p>\n

Christian Dupont’s response, filed by a Washington firm the family had by then retained, is forty-two pages and it is, I am told by people who read a lot of these, a genuinely good submission.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

It argues, correctly, that no information ever moved.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

It argues, correctly, that no contract can be traced to any improper act.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

It argues that the language was puffery, that puffery is ubiquitous, and that a marketing document is not a representation.<\/p>\n

It contains a paragraph about the eleven-year performance record, which is real.<\/p>\n

And it contains, at paragraph 106, a sentence that I have read perhaps forty times and that ended any possibility I had of thinking about this dispassionately.<\/p>\n

It says:\u00a0Neither Mr.<\/em><\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Dupont nor DEG can be held responsible for third-party inferences drawn from accurate statements about Mr.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Dupont’s personal circumstances.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

His personal circumstances.<\/p>\n

I was married to him on the day that was filed.<\/p>\n

The nullity judgment was six months away.<\/p>\n

I had a letter of counselling in a file.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

I had been doing records disposition for eleven months.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

And I was, in a forty-two-page submission to the federal government, a personal circumstance about which accurate statements had been made.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Part Thirty-One: The Agreement<\/strong><\/p>\n

Dupont Enterprise Group was not debarred.<\/p>\n

I want to say that clearly and early because it is the outcome, and because for about two months I experienced it as a defeat, and because I no longer do.<\/p>\n

What happened instead is the ordinary thing, and it took seven months of negotiation between lawyers and a suspension and debarment official named Priscilla Trant, and it produced a document called an administrative agreement, which runs to twenty-six pages and is public.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Under it:<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The suspension was lifted after fourteen months.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Christian Dupont resigned as chief executive and from the board, permanently, and is excluded by name from any role, formal or informal, paid or unpaid, in any entity holding a federal contract, for a period of years.<\/p>\n

The company retained an independent monitor at its own expense for three years, who reports twice a year, and who has authority to review any marketing material before it is issued.<\/p>\n

The company implemented a written ethics and compliance programme, trained every employee, and established a reporting line.<\/p>\n

Every piece of marketing material the company had issued since 2021 was withdrawn and reissued.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

And Robert Dupont, at seventy-eight, came out of retirement and signed the agreement as interim chief executive.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Ninety-one people kept their jobs.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Dwayne is still driving a truck.<\/p>\n

I was asked, by Priscilla Trant’s office, whether I wished to submit a victim statement, which is not a normal feature of that process and which I have since learned she does as a matter of practice.<\/p>\n

I submitted two pages.<\/p>\n

I did not ask for debarment.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

I sat with that for nine days and I did not ask for it, and the reason is a conversation I had with Giselle on a telephone at about eleven at night in the March.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

I said something about the ninety-one people being a human shield, which is a phrase I was pleased with at the time.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

And Giselle said: “Camille, I employ four people.<\/p>\n

“If somebody did something to me \u2014 if I did something \u2014 and four people I know the names of lost their jobs because a woman in an office decided the point needed making, I would carry that and they would carry that and the man it was aimed at would move to Atlanta.<\/p>\n

“You have spent nine months telling me that the thing you do for a living is decide what a company is presently capable of.<\/p>\n

So decide.”<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

The two pages I submitted are about the sentence in the 2023 proposal, and about what it is like to find your own marriage described as market access, and they do not ask for any particular outcome.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Priscilla Trant quoted four lines of them in the recitals to the agreement, which is a public document, which means those four lines are permanent.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Part Thirty-Two: The Party in March<\/strong><\/p>\n

There was supposed to be a second event.<\/p>\n

The wedding in September was, in the Dupont family’s construction of it, the small one.<\/p>\n

The real one \u2014 the one Robert wanted, the one with the family at it, the one at a club in Palm Beach with three hundred and forty people and a band from Miami \u2014 was booked for the seventh of March.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Deposits had been paid on eleven vendors.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

And Giselle Marchetti plans events for a living.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

She had built it herself.<\/p>\n

She had the run sheet.<\/p>\n

She had a shared folder with a floor plan and a vendor matrix and a colour-coded timeline that I have seen and that is, I am told by somebody in the industry, an unusually good one.<\/p>\n

She cancelled it herself, on the tenth and eleventh of February, over two days, on the telephone, one vendor at a time.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Eleven calls.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

She did not have an assistant do it.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

She did not send an email.<\/p>\n

She told me, months later, that she had thought about sending an email for about an hour and had decided against it because she works in that industry and those eleven people were going to find out anyway and she was not going to have them find out from each other.<\/p>\n

So she called the venue, and the band, and the florist, and the linen company, and the photographer, and the rest, and she said the same sentence eleven times, which she has told me and which was:\u00a0I’m cancelling the seventh of March.<\/em><\/p>\n

It’s personal, it’s not negotiable, and I’m not asking for the deposits back.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Nine of the eleven returned them anyway.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The photographer, a woman in Delray Beach whose name I do not have permission to use, sent back the deposit and also sent, by post, the full set of files from September, unedited, with a note that said she would keep no copy and that the negatives \u2014 she used that word, though there are no negatives \u2014 were Giselle’s to do what she liked with.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Giselle has not deleted them.<\/p>\n

She told me that in a car park in Jacksonville about a year and a half after, and I asked her why, and she thought about it for a long time.<\/p>\n

And she said: “Because my mother’s in them.<\/p>\n

“And because I looked lovely.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

And I did not do anything wrong that day.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

And I am not going to burn a photograph of myself looking lovely because of what he was doing while I was doing it.”<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Part Thirty-Three: A Conference Room on Clematis Street<\/strong><\/p>\n

The divorce was finalized on the second of April.<\/p>\n

It took nine weeks to negotiate and then five months to get through a court that was, at that point, running a backlog, and the final hearing lasted four minutes and I did not have to attend it.<\/p>\n

What I did attend was the signing, in a conference room on Clematis Street in West Palm Beach, on a Tuesday afternoon in the January, with four lawyers in the room and a paralegal and a notary.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

I did not have to be in the same room as him.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Estelle offered me three alternatives, including separate floors, and I said no to all of them.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

He looked well.<\/p>\n

That is the first thing and it is a stupid thing and I am putting it in because it was the first thing I thought.<\/p>\n

He had lost weight.<\/p>\n

He was wearing a suit I recognized.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

He was not wearing the watch.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

We signed in a specific order, because there were four instruments and they had to go in sequence, and it took about twenty minutes, and for most of it nobody said anything except the paralegal saying\u00a0here, and here, and initial here.<\/em><\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

And when it was done he stood up, and his lawyer put a hand on his arm, which is a lawyer’s way of saying\u00a0do not<\/em>, and Christian said, “Hollis, it’s fine,” and looked at me and said:<\/p>\n

“Camille.<\/p>\n

Can I say one thing.”<\/p>\n

Estelle said, “No.”<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

And I said, “Yes.”<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

And Christian Dupont said: “I never once thought about what I was doing to you.”<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

And I waited, because I assumed there was a second half \u2014 an apology, a but, a mitigation, something.<\/p>\n

There was no second half.<\/p>\n

That was the whole sentence.<\/p>\n

He had come to a conference room with one thing to say and it was a confession with no plea attached to it, and I think, having had time, that it is the truest thing he knows about himself and that he had only just found it out.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

I said, “I know.”<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

And he nodded, and picked up his coat, and went out, and I have not seen him since and I do not expect to.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

The watch came back four months later, by courier, to Estelle’s office, in its original box, with the third link from the clasp in a small envelope taped inside the lid, which I had kept in a drawer in 2021 and which he must have found when he packed.<\/p>\n

There was no note.<\/p>\n

I sold it in the November and gave the money to a legal aid clinic in Duval County that does family law, and I am aware that this is the kind of gesture people put in accounts like this one to look better than they are, and I am putting it in anyway because it is what I did and because the clinic sent a receipt and I have it.<\/p>\n

Part Thirty-Four: Riverside<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Giselle Marchetti’s business nearly went under and it did not, and the reason it did not is not inspiring and I am going to tell it accurately.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

She lost four clients in the spring.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

None of them said why.<\/p>\n

That is the thing about a business like hers: nobody fires you with a reason.<\/p>\n

Two of them simply did not renew, one moved to a national firm, and one \u2014 the regional bank, which had been eleven per cent of her revenue for five years \u2014 told her they were “taking the annual meeting in-house,” which they did not.<\/p>\n

The nullity petition was public.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Her name was on it.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Her married name was on her lease, her website, her invoices, her business cards, her van.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

She had changed everything in October and had to change it all back in January, and she paid for that twice, and she has told me that the rebranding cost her somewhere north of nine thousand dollars and about six weeks of evenings.<\/p>\n

She laid off one of her four people in April.<\/p>\n

His name is Toby and she rehired him in the following February and she says that April is the worst thing in the whole business and that she does not include the wedding in that.<\/p>\n

And then two things happened that she did not engineer.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

The first is that one of the two hospital foundations, whose director had heard the story from somebody, called her and doubled the size of their contract, and said nothing about why, and has never mentioned it since.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The second is that she started taking weddings.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

She had not done weddings in nine years.<\/p>\n

She had got out of them deliberately in 2016 because corporate work pays on time and does not cry.<\/p>\n

She took a wedding in the June because she needed the money, and then four more, and by the following spring it was a third of her book and now it is about half, and she is, by every account I have heard, extraordinarily good at it in a way she was not good at it in 2015.<\/p>\n

I asked her what changed.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

And she said: “I stopped selling them the day.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

“Everybody in this industry sells the day.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

I sell the arrangements.<\/p>\n

I ask them harder questions than anybody has ever asked them.<\/p>\n

I ask them who is paying for what and what happens if it rains and who is not speaking to whom and what the cancellation terms are on every single line, and I make them read them.<\/p>\n

“And about one in six of them finds that unromantic and goes somewhere else, and the other five tell everybody they know.”<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

The judgment is on the wall behind her desk.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Part Thirty-Five: What It Cost<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

I want to do an accounting, because I have read a great many accounts like this one and almost none of them do, and because the absence of it is what makes them useless.<\/p>\n

Eleven months and two weeks of suspended warrant.<\/p>\n

I got it back on the twenty-ninth of August of the following year, in a meeting that lasted six minutes, and I signed a new Certificate of Appointment, and Dell Boykin shook my hand and said, “Welcome back,” and I went to my car afterward for a while.<\/p>\n

A letter of counselling, which came out of my file two years later, and which I can describe accurately and cannot think about accurately.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Legal fees of a size I am not going to state, most but not all of which were recovered.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Two and a half years of income, forgone, in the difference between the letter of the thirty-first of October and what I accepted.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Roughly ninety per cent of the Dupont side of my life, which was, by the end, most of my life.<\/p>\n

Robert.<\/p>\n

Christian’s sister, who I was close to and who has not spoken to me and whom I do not blame.<\/p>\n

Two couples we saw constantly and who did the thing people do, which is not to take sides but to become extremely busy.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

The house, which I kept, and in which I could not cook for about seven months, and in which I replaced the kitchen window in the following year for reasons that are not structural and that cost two thousand two hundred dollars and that I would do again.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Dolores Vanterpool, for five weeks, which I have recovered.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

A year of my thirties.<\/p>\n

And the one that I did not see coming and that Dr.<\/p>\n

Sorokin says is the actual injury and that I have spent two years on:<\/p>\n

I do not believe people’s accounts of their own whereabouts anymore.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Not in a dramatic way.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Not in a way anybody could see.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

But a colleague says he was at the dentist and some part of my mind, without being asked, quietly notes that this is a claim, and files it, and I cannot make it stop doing that, and it is exhausting, and it has cost me at least one friendship with a man who did nothing at all except be slightly vague about a Saturday.<\/p>\n

Against which:<\/p>\n

The sentence about the household does not appear in any document anywhere in the federal government, because every piece of that company’s marketing material was withdrawn and reissued under a monitor’s review.<\/p>\n

Ninety-one people are employed.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

A woman I sat two rows from in eleventh-grade chemistry found out from me, at a table, with a folder in front of her, six days after she asked a single question, and not from a process server, and not from a reporter, and not in nine years’ time from a stranger at a party.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

And I have four lines in the recitals of a public administrative agreement.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

That is the whole of the ledger.<\/p>\n

I have had it out and looked at it perhaps a hundred times and the answer is never the same twice.<\/p>\n

Part Thirty-Six: Four Things<\/strong><\/p>\n

I have been asked to speak about this twice \u2014 once at a professional association meeting for acquisition staff, and once, to my considerable surprise, at a continuing education session for event planners in Orlando, which Giselle arranged and at which she introduced me.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

I say four things.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

One. There is no national marriage registry, and the record you want is at a county clerk’s office, and it costs about nine dollars.<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Nobody checks.<\/p>\n

The licence application asks whether you have been married before and how it ended, and the answer is taken on trust, and in most states there is no mechanism by which it could be anything else.<\/p>\n

Which means that a marriage certificate proves a ceremony happened.<\/p>\n

It does not prove that anybody was free to be at it.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

If you want to know whether a person is divorced, you do not look for a divorce.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

You look for the case: a dissolution of marriage is a lawsuit, it has a case number, it is in the clerk of court’s public index in the county where it was filed, and it ends in a final judgment.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

No case, no judgment, no divorce.<\/p>\n

It is not rude to look.<\/p>\n

It took Giselle Marchetti two evenings and she did it from a sofa.<\/p>\n

Two. Read the photographs.<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Not the faces.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The rooms.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Every photograph anybody posts contains a great deal of information that the person posting it is not thinking about, and most of it is dull, and occasionally it is the whole thing.<\/p>\n

I identified a date range of about eighteen months from a dead plant and a piece of two-by-four, and I did it because I have spent eleven years reading past-performance submissions and treating every image in them as an assertion that has to be supported.<\/p>\n

I am not suggesting anybody run a forensic analysis of their friends’ engagement announcements.<\/p>\n

I am suggesting that when something is wrong, the photographs are usually the least guarded thing in the entire record, because the person posting them is proud.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Three. If your household is an asset to somebody’s business, find out what they are saying about it.<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

This one is narrow and I say it anyway, because the people it applies to are more numerous than they think.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

If you hold a professional position that gives somebody else’s company an advantage by association \u2014 a licence, a clearance, a warrant, a board seat, a regulatory role, a job at a customer \u2014 then somewhere there may be a document with a sentence about you in it that you have never seen.<\/p>\n

Look.<\/p>\n

Capability statements are public.<\/p>\n

So are company websites, conference programmes, award submissions, and the bios on a trade association’s page.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Search your own name and your spouse’s company’s name together, once a year, and read what comes back as though a stranger wrote it about somebody else.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

If you had asked me, at any point in three years, whether I was comfortable with how DEG described me, I would have said the question was absurd, because I would have assumed the answer was: they don’t.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

And four, which is the one I actually go to those rooms to say.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Write down the recusal.<\/p>\n

Not the conversation in the doorway.<\/p>\n

The memorandum.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

One paragraph, dated, to a file, to your supervisor, copied to yourself.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

I did the right thing in the March and I did it in five minutes in a doorway with a colleague who behaved impeccably, and the only thing wrong with any of it was that no piece of paper existed, and that is four lines in a report and a letter in a file and a corridor in August.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

The memorandum takes ninety seconds.<\/p>\n

I have written eleven of them since and I will write one every time for the rest of my career, and I have been asked, once, by somebody junior, whether that is not slightly paranoid.<\/p>\n

And what I told him is what I will end this on.<\/p>\n

The paper is not there to prove you are honest.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

It is there so that on the day somebody asks, you do not have to be believed.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Part Thirty-Seven: The Reunion<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

The twentieth reunion was in the November, at a hotel on the bayfront in Saint Augustine, and it was organized by a committee of four people, one of whom was Dolores Vanterpool, who is no longer annoyed with me and who telephoned in August to say that she had been made to do it and that I was coming.<\/p>\n

I did not want to go.<\/p>\n

I had two very good reasons and one real one.<\/p>\n

The real one is that everybody would know.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

The class group chat had not been merciful.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

There had been a period, in the spring, where I had to leave it, and where Giselle had to leave it, and where a woman neither of us had thought about since 2006 posted a long paragraph with a praying-hands emoji that I will not describe further.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Giselle called me in September and said she was going, and that she had been asked to do the room, for free, because the committee had no money, and that she had said yes.<\/p>\n

And I said, “You’re going to do the flowers at your own reunion four hundred yards from where you got married.”<\/p>\n

And she said, “Eleven hundred yards.<\/p>\n

And yes.”<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

So I drove down on a Saturday in November and I parked, and I sat in the car for some period of time, because that is apparently what I do now, and then I went in.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

She had done the room beautifully.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Of course she had.<\/p>\n

And what happened was almost nothing.<\/p>\n

Four people said something.<\/p>\n

All four were kind and two were awkward about it and one was a man named Curtis who I had not spoken to since 2004 and who said, “I heard.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

That’s rough,” and then changed the subject with such deliberate, obvious mercy that I nearly had to go outside.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Nobody else mentioned it at all.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

I had constructed, over about eleven weeks, an evening in which a hundred and forty people looked at me, and what I got was a hundred and forty people who were mostly worried about their own hair, and I sat at a table at about ten o’clock with a drink and understood that I had been the only person in the building thinking about it.<\/p>\n

Giselle found me at the end, when the committee had gone and the staff were stacking chairs, and sat down in the seat next to me and took her shoes off and put them on the table, which is a thing I have since learned she does.<\/p>\n

And she said: “Can I ask you something I’ve never asked you.”<\/p>\n

And I said yes.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

And she said: “In the courtyard.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

When you saw him get out of the car.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Why didn’t you stand up?”<\/p>\n

And I gave her the answer I have given everybody for two years, which is that I did not know whether she knew, and that the cost of getting it wrong was too high, and that it was a judgment call in eleven seconds and I would make it the same way again.<\/p>\n

All of which is true.<\/p>\n

And Giselle Marchetti listened to the whole of it and then said: “Camille.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

That’s the reason you give.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

What’s the reason?”<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

And I sat there for a while.<\/p>\n

And then I said: “Because I didn’t want it to be the thing that was true about me for the rest of my life.”<\/p>\n

Which is her sentence.<\/p>\n

She said it to me in a car outside a state attorney’s office in the April, and I had been carrying it around for nineteen months without ever once noticing that it was also an answer to a question about a courtyard.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

She did not say anything for a bit.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Then she said, “Huh.”<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Then she said, “Well.<\/p>\n

It’s a good sentence.”<\/p>\n

And I said, “It’s yours.”<\/p>\n

And Giselle said, “I know.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

I’m very quotable.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Are you going to help me carry these vases or are you going to keep sitting there.”<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

We carried the vases out to her van, in eleven trips, across a car park, at half past eleven at night, two women from the class of 2006 who had known each other for twenty years and spoken for two.<\/p>\n

And on the last trip she stopped by the open back doors and looked at the water for a second and said, without any particular weight:<\/p>\n

“You know the worst thing?<\/p>\n

I still like weddings.”<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

And I said, “That’s not the worst thing.”<\/p>\n

And she said, “No.<\/p>\n

It really isn’t.”<\/p>\n

And we put the last of the vases in, and she shut the doors, and drove to Jacksonville, and I drove to Palm Beach, to a house with a new window in the kitchen and a gate that does not stick, and I got in at about one in the morning and slept until nine, which I had not done in two years.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
