At three seventeen that morning months ago, I had believed the only way to stop being overlooked was to write something nobody could ignore.<\/p>\n

There were moments when I still understood why I had done it.<\/p>\n

There were other moments when I remembered the receptionist’s face and wished I had begun differently.<\/p>\n

Both could be true.<\/p>\n

Neither changed the choice I had kept making afterward: read the records, ask the question, take the advice, make the decision, and let the people responsible do their work.<\/p>\n

I took a sip of coffee.<\/p>\n

No sugar.<\/p>\n

No reason to explain the preference.<\/p>\n

Nobody’s key in the door announcing whether the day had been successful enough.<\/p>\n

Behind me, the repaired door closed easily in its frame.<\/p>\n

Ahead, light lay across the water.<\/p>\n
