He walked over, calmly, and he positioned himself directly behind Chloe, close enough that she could feel him there, close enough that everyone at the table could see he was with her.
But, and I want to be precise about this, because it mattered enormously, he did not take the box out of her hands.
He did not step in front of her.
He did not speak on her behalf or take the moment away from her.
He stood behind his daughter, one steady presence at her back, and he let the moment remain entirely hers.
He was not there to fight for her.
