Beatrice did, eventually, reach out, and the terms were exactly as the card had stated: any contact ran through Chloe, on Chloe’s terms, at Chloe’s pace.

It was not a slammed door forever.

It was a door with a lock on it, and my daughter holding the key, and that turned out to make all the difference, because a relationship you can leave is the only kind that can ever be safe.

Beatrice has been, since then, noticeably, carefully different, and while I do not pretend her heart transformed overnight, I have watched her at least learn the outer behaviors of respect, because for the first time in her life the person she wished to be near had the power to say no.

That is what a boundary does.
