You Are My Daughter
It is a terrible thing to realize, in the middle of a Christmas morning, that the story you have been telling yourself for years about your own goodness is not quite true.
I had always cast myself, in my own mind, as Chloe’s protector, the mother caught in an impossible situation, doing her patient best to shield her daughter from a cruel grandmother without blowing the whole family apart.
It was a flattering story and I had believed it completely.
But sitting there watching the coffee run unfelt down my husband’s hand, I saw the story from the outside for the first time, and from the outside it did not look like protection.
It looked like management.
