He had decided that Chloe would never again spend a holiday as a helpless little girl, waiting and hoping for the adults around her to protect her, dependent on whether the grown-ups felt brave enough that day to make a scene on her behalf.
He was done leaving her defenseless in his mother’s house.
But, and this was the part that told me most about the kind of father he was, he did not pull the box out then, in the heat of the morning.
He did not stand up and make a speech or cause a scene during the gift exchange.
He waited.
Because whatever he had prepared, he had prepared it not as a weapon for himself to wield, but as something else entirely, something that belonged, he had decided, to Chloe.
