You Are My Daughter
Looking at her that night, I could not for the life of me remember what I had imagined was worse than this.
There is no confrontation, no scene, no fractured holiday, that could possibly have been worse for my daughter than the slow, quiet, three-year lesson that she was not quite wanted, delivered in a house full of adults who saw and said nothing.
I had gotten it exactly backward.
The scene I had been so afraid of was not the danger.
My silence was the danger.
