“You are my daughter,” Caleb said.
He said it slowly, clearly, holding her eyes, so that there could be no mistaking it for a comforting reflex.
“You are my daughter.
And no cheap tag written by anyone in that house is ever going to get to decide that.
Not ever.”
Chloe looked back at him, searching his face the way children search the faces of the adults they most need to believe.
And I watched my husband hold that gaze without flinching, without hedging, without a single one of the small qualifiers that might have let a sliver of doubt back in.
