You Are My Daughter
Not because the people inside them are weak or foolish, but because cruelty dressed as courtesy is so disorienting, so hard to name, that even the adults who see it start to doubt their own eyes and go along, and the going-along becomes a habit, and the habit becomes a life.
It took the clarity of a child, who had not yet learned to doubt what she plainly felt, and the courage of a father, who had at last stopped making excuses, to break the spell for all of us.
I found my own card first.
Samantha, it read, in her careful hand.
Then I saw Caleb’s name, neatly printed.
Then the cards for the visiting aunts and uncles, and for the teenage cousins, every single one of them with their name written out properly, formally, an acknowledgment of their place in the family.
And then I came to the card at the seat beside mine, the seat that had been set for my daughter, and I felt the blood go cold in my veins, because Chloe’s card did not have her name on it at all.
