You Are My Daughter
She did none of those things.
Something had changed in my daughter overnight, something a small red velvet box and six unqualified words from her father had put there.
She did not crumple.
She did not cry.
She did not turn to me to make it better.
Instead, very calmly, she reached into her little beaded purse, and I watched her small fingers close around something inside it, and I understood, with a jolt that was equal parts terror and awe, exactly what she had decided to do.
In that instant I felt two things war inside me so violently that I could barely breathe.
