In Julian’s mind, I genuinely did owe them, because in his mind my whole value had always been what I provided, and cutting off the provision was a breach of the only contract he believed we had.
He was furious not because I had hurt him, but because a utility he considered his by right had been switched off.
And I walked, then, out of the kitchen and down the hall to my home office, because Julian’s fury had reminded me of something, and it was time, I decided, to look again at what I had found.
