Six months later, the afternoon sun poured through the floor-to-ceiling windows of my brand-new accounting firm in lower downtown Denver, the firm that bore my name and no one else’s.
My phone buzzed on my new mahogany desk with that final confirmation from my attorney, the restitution deposited, the last page of the whole long file closed at last.
And I read it, and I closed it, and I picked up my coat and walked out onto the sunlit balcony overlooking the mountains, and I let myself feel the full size of what had changed.
