You Can’t Afford Me

My mic clicked back on. “When I was thirteen, terrified and facing chemotherapy, Thomas Higgins told me this was a special medical form. He tricked a child into signing herself into the foster system, purely to avoid paying his deductible.”
The crowd erupted — boos, gasps, angry shouts. The reporters climbed over each other, flashes strobing against Thomas’s horrified face.
Then the screen flickered, and a new image appeared: the Facebook photo.
The sun, the yacht, the champagne, the STANFORD BOUND banner, the timestamp circled in red.
