You Can’t Afford Me
Andre Boone was asked how much, and he had twenty-two dollars in an envelope.
The same three words. And I had built an entire personality, a career, a public speaking fee, and a clinic on the certainty that I knew what those words meant when a man said them about his sick daughter — and the first time in my adult life that somebody said them to my face, I got it exactly, catastrophically wrong, and a nine-year-old went home with a bone lesion and no appointment.
I got his address off the intake form and I drove there after clinic.
He answered the door and he was not glad to see me.
I stood on his step and I said, “I’m going to tell you something and then you can decide whether to let me in.
“When I was thirteen I was diagnosed with leukemia and my father asked the doctor how much it would cost, and then he tricked me into signing myself into foster care so he wouldn’t have to pay it. That’s a real thing that happened and you can look it up, because the video’s on the internet.
“You asked me how much and I heard him. That’s not your fault, it’s mine, and I did it to you in a room where you were trying to find out how to save your kid. I’m sorry. I’ve been a doctor for seven years and that’s the worst thing I’ve done in an exam room.”
Andre Boone stood in his doorway for a while.
