Curtis told me about two o’clock in the morning on the thirteenth of October, standing outside the family lounge on the fourth floor, holding two cups of coffee, one of which was for me.
He did it casually.

He said — and I typed this into my phone four minutes later, in a stairwell, before I did anything else, and this is verbatim from that note:
