You Gave Me a Beautiful Lie
A narrow concrete cellar lay beneath it, and from the cellar a tunnel, reinforced and old, ran toward the abandoned property that backed onto my mother’s land.
I watched officers carry out evidence bags — old photographs, a metal cashbox, files, a man’s clothing — and I watched Detective Kingsbury’s face change as he understood the scale of what he was standing on.
And then, near dusk, a young officer came up out of that hatch too fast, his face gray, and said the words that split my life in half.
“Detective.
There’s someone alive down there.”
I did not understand, in the first instant, what those words could mean.
