You Gave Me a Beautiful Lie
I had chosen a career where I could earn approval on merit, since I could not earn it at home.
I had married a man who left, in part, I think, because I did not know how to believe I deserved to be stayed with.
I had raised my own son in a near-terror of ever letting him feel for one moment the cold I grew up in.
The whole architecture of my adult life had been built around a wound I believed I had caused.
And now, on the floor of my apartment, holding a photograph, I understood that I had caused none of it.
My mother’s coldness had never been a response to anything in me.
