He shoved the nursery door open and stepped in while I was feeding Leander.

“The results are in,” he announced, and his breath was coming in shallow catches.

He looked terrified — not of being wrong, I realized, but of the possibility that his whole story was about to be tested against the truth, and that he might have to live inside what he had done.

“Open it,” I said softly, setting Leander down in his crib and rising to face my husband.

“Read it out loud.”
