Chapter 6 — They Thought They Had Silenced Me

They thought I was a naive, heartbroken woman in a hospital bed, dependent on her husband’s mercy and frightened of his family’s reach.

They thought the concussion would fog my memory and make me pliable, easy to manage.

They thought that when I was discharged I would be so grateful for a soft word that I would sign whatever was put in front of me.

What they did not understand — what Ian, in particular, had never once understood in five years of marriage — was that the woman who kept the peace in their house had done it by choice, not weakness, and that the choice was now revoked.
