Brian’s voice came first. “She gets everything. Every time she coughs, every time she cries, everybody runs.”

Marissa said, “Then stop acting like I’m the bad guy for wanting one normal weekend.”

Paper rustled.

Brian said, “Just sign the placement packet. It’s temporary.”

Marissa said, “And your dad?”

Brian laughed once. “My dad will do what he always does. He’ll rescue the situation and blame himself for not noticing sooner.”
